Center for the offense and linebacker for defense…Left an impression on Northwestern's coaches and players as a role model…During the summer before his senior year, as a team captain, personally wrote letters to all players encouraging them to continue their conditioning over the summer and expressed his goals for them individually and as a team...During that year, with only two coaches for the team, Verlyn became a player-coach, taking over the defense by calling defensive plays on the field.
