Ben earned NAIA All-American second team honors in basketball in 2000 after averaging 19.6 points. A senior captain on the squad that won the NAIA Division II National Championship in 2001, Gerleman averaged 16.5 points and was named to the all-national tournament team. He is the ninth leading scorer in school history with 1,691 points, third in career three-point field goals with 250, and 20th in assists in 231.
