Austin was an outside linebacker and strong safety for the Red Raider football team. He was named to the American Football Coaches Association NAIA All-American team and received first team All-American honors from Victory Sports Network as a senior. He earned All-American honorable mention status from the NAIA his first three years. Austin was the Hauff Mid-American Sports/Great Plains Athletic Conference Player of the Year in 2006 and a four-time first team all-conference selection. He ranks 7th in career interceptions at Northwestern with 17 and is tied for 8th in career sacks with 19. He also recorded 285.5 tackles, 206 of which were unassisted, and 62 tackles for loss. On special teams he returned 24 kicks for 453 yards.
