A Family Tradition: Greller Joins Caddying Trail at U.S. Senior Open

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – For Ray Greller, a sophomore men's golfer at Northwestern College, his journey in the sport goes beyond playing. At this summer's U.S. Senior Open, Greller had the opportunity to caddie for his father, Tom, an experience that left a significant impact on his own golf career.

Stepping onto the course at the U.S. Senior Open, Greller found himself in a unique position — no longer just a spectator, but an integral part of the tournament.

"I've caddied for my dad before as well, but never in a tournament of this magnitude," Greller said. "I liked the challenge of caddying because I got to help my dad with any club decisions he had, and he trusted me to read almost every putt he looked at."

INSIDE THE ROPES
Greller shared a special connection with his uncle, Michael, who is the caddie for Master's champion Jordan Spieth. This bond proved invaluable as his uncle offered insights into the art of caddying.

"I learned a lot from watching his demeanor and how he and Jordan interacted on the course," Greller said. "It all just depends on what your player needs from you, so that was a big thing I learned — to be adaptable."

This lesson became a guiding principle in Greller's own game, as he realized the importance of adjusting his approach based on the unique circumstances of each round.

STRATEGIC THINKING
Caddying for his father also provided Greller with a firsthand look at the strategic aspects of the game. Conversations with his father about course management and shot selection opened his eyes to the importance of a strategic mindset. It was a reminder that success on the golf course isn't solely about technique but about making calculated decisions.

Ray also took note of his father's focus on body and recovery — an aspect of the game he began prioritizing during his time at Northwestern. Witnessing his father's dedication to maintaining physical well-being reinforced the significance of self-care, especially during the demanding travel schedule of a collegiate golfer.

As Greller continues his collegiate golf career at Northwestern, these lessons remain at the forefront of his mind. His experience at the U.S. Senior Open served as a catalyst for personal growth and improvement.

"My game definitely improved over the course of my freshman year, due to Coach Aberson and my teammates pushing me to be better, so I expect to keep improving, and hopefully try to get on tour one day," Greller said.

FAMILY CONNECTIONS
Beyond the technical aspects of the game, golf has always been a powerful connection between Greller and his father. Countless rounds together have fueled a healthy competition, often causing friendly rivalries. Greller cherishes the opportunity to bond with his father on the course, pushing each other to become better players and sharing memorable experiences.

For Ray, the journey is not just about personal achievements and aspirations. It's a testament to the influence of family, mentorship, and the game of golf in shaping his path. As he continues to play and grow, Greller carries the lessons learned from his father, uncle, and the U.S. Senior Open, striving to become the best golfer he can be while cherishing the bonds that golf has created.

"It's a game we'll continue to play till we can't play it anymore."
