Northwestern Drops Season Opener to Tough Iowa Central Squad

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – The Northwestern College men's tennis team (0-1, 0-0 GPAC) opened the fall season with a 6-1 loss to a tough Iowa Central Community College squad at the NWC Tennis Courts on Wednesday evening.

"I was really happy with how we played against a very good junior college team. The doubles matches were closer than the final score for the second and third team doubles. David and Leo played really well losing in a tie break to a great team from Iowa Central," commented head coach Monte Tilgner. "Our top three players in singles played exceptionally well and had very close matches. Mateo played an especially good second set against a very talented opponent. Arthur won the first set ended up losing in a super tiebreaker. Leandro won the first set dropped the second set and then played a great super tie break to win his match and get us our one team point of the match."

Iowa Central took all three doubles matches, to take the team point. At No. 1 doubles, the Red Raider duo of David Bomgaars (Jr., Aurora, Colo.) and Leandro Costa (So., Caratinga, Brazil) forced a tiebreaker, dropping that 6-2 to fall 7-6.

Costa would not let the duo tiebreaker get to him, as he would play in his second tiebreaker of the evening against Iowa Central's Derrick Namanya, winning 5-7, 6-4 [10-3] to pick up the lone Red Raider point of the match and winning his first singles match of the season.

At No. 4 singles, Arthur Vicente (So., Sao Paulo, Brazil) would battle ICCC's Emmanuel Oudensi to the end, falling in the final tiebreaker of the night. Vincente would take the first set 7-5. He would fall 6-3 in the second set and would drop the tiebreak 10-3.

"This was a great match leading up to the GPAC individual tournament which is this Friday and Saturday," concluded Tilgner. "The guys have been working hard and we look to continually improve throughout this fall season."
