Red Raiders Pick Up a Pair of Wins in Eastern Iowa over NCAA Foes

Box Score 1 WAVERLY, Iowa – The Northwestern College men's tennis team (7-5, 0-0 GPAC) got back to their winning ways with a pair of 5-4 victories over National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III foes on the campus of Wartburg College on Saturday.  

MATCH 1: NWC 5, Wartburg 4
The hosts of Wartburg College (5-14, 0-0 A-R-C) held the early 2-1 lead after doubles play, thanks to NCAA scoring on the day. It was Brian VandenBerg (Sr., Mason City, Iowa) and Arthur Vicente (Fr., Sao Paulo, Brazil) who tallied the 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles for the Red Raiders.

Northwestern would then go on to pick up four victories in singles play, securing the 5-4 win, as No. 1-4 slots picked up wins. VandenBerg picked up a hard-fought 6-3, 0-6, 1-0(10-7) win. His doubles partner, Vincente, picked also picked up a win (No. 4) with another three-set battle (6-4, 6-7, 1-0(10-7)) as they both improved to 2-0 on the day with their doubles and singles victories combined.

David Bomgaars (So., Aurora, Colo.) picked up a 7-5, 7-5 win over Wartburg's Cade Davis at No. 2, followed by a 6-1, 7-5 victory for Leandro Costa (Fr., Caratinga, Brazil) over Wartburg's Elijah Swanstrom at No. 3.

MATCH 2: NWC 5, UW-La Crosse 4
The second match of the day saw NWC jump out to a 2-1 lead after doubles play, thanks to wins for the VandenBerg/Vincente pair over Wisconsin-La Crosse (5-9, 0-0 NJAC). Additionally, at No.1 it was Bomgaars and Costa picking up a big 8-2 win over UW-La Crosse's Alex Moore and Lincoln Maher.

It was a dead even split in singles play, as it was the No. 1-3 slots who secured the win for the Red Raiders. VandenBerg downed Alex Moore (UWL) 2-6, 6-3, 1-0(10-6), improving to a perfect 4-0 on the day for Northwestern.

Bomgaars tallied a straight 6-3, 6-3 victory over Cole Contardi (UWL) at No. 2 singles, while Costa picked up his second singles win of the day with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Brady Horstmann (UWL).

Up Next: Northwestern will commence Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) play with a pair of matches in the state of Nebraska next weekend against Hastings (March 31) and Doane (April 1).
