Men's Tennis Starts Spring Slate With A Pair of Sweeps

Red Raiders down a pair of NCAA Division III opponents

Box Score 1 MOUNT VERNON, Iowa – The Northwestern College men's tennis team (3-1, 0-0 GPAC) opened their spring slate with a pair of sweeps against National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III opponents in eastern Iowa, hosted by Cornell College.

The Red Raiders started the day with a 9-0 win over Wisconsin Lutheran (0-6, 0-0 NACC) and ended the day with a 9-0 victory over the Rams of Cornell College (2-1, 0-0 MWC). The two matches were scored via NCAA scoring, giving a point for each doubles victory won.

Northwestern swept all six doubles matches played today, geared up for the start of league play.

Brian VandenBerg (Sr., Mason City, Iowa) played his first matches at No. 1 this season in a line-up shuffle, picking up two victories over Wisconsin Lutheran's Aidan Newborg (6-2, 6-2) and Cornell's Alexander Strumlauf (6-2, 6-4).

David Bomgaars (So., Aurora, Colo.) also picked up a pair of wins today, sliding up from the No. 3 slot up to No. 2, while the same could be said of Leandro Costa (Fr., Caratinga, Brazil) who slid up a spot to the No. 4 match.

Jack Roisum (Jr., Rapid City, S.D.) moved into the No. 6 slot against Wisconsin Lutheran and picked up a 6-1, 6-1 decision, while brother Noah Roisum (Jr., Rapid City, S.D.) played in the No. 6 position in the Cornell match, winning 6-3, 6-4.

Up Next: Northwestern will open Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) play for the season on Thursday, February 16 when they travel to Yankton, S.D. to battle the Lancers of Mount Marty University.
