Men's Soccer Seeks First GPAC Tournament Title on Thursday

Northwestern and Morningside to face off for NAIA tournament auto bid

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – It will be a battle between two teams that advanced in dramatic fashion as the Northwestern men's soccer team (14-4-2, 8-1-2 GPAC) searches for their first-ever Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) tournament title, facing the Morningside Mustangs (7-5-7, 5-3-3 GPAC) on Thursday, November 9. Kickoff will be at 7:00 p.m. from the NWC Soccer Complex.

REGULAR SEASON MEETING
Northwestern took care of business in the first meeting between the Red Raiders and Mustangs on September 20 at the NWC Soccer Complex. Jacey McFaddin (Sr., Spijkenssee, Netherlands) put Northwestern up 1-0 before the half, while Riley Aarbo (Jr., Sioux Falls, S.D.) and Johannes von Saldern (Sr., Jena, Germany) both scored in the second half. Pablo Aspas (Sr., Valencia, Spain) solidified the back line with seven saves.

NORTHWESTERN NOTABLES
  • This will be the second GPAC Championship match appearance in three years for the Red Raiders.
  • Northwestern ended the year with only one GPAC loss, coming in the opener on September 16 against regular season champion Briar Cliff.
  • Tim Kaltenberger finished the year as the GPAC scoring champion with his 14 goals.
  • Kaltenberger is now tied for third in program history in single-season scoring (15).
  • In their last 11 matches, Northwestern is outscoring opponents 27-7.
  • They now have 11 shutouts this season, which is tied for the most in program history (2021).
  • Stan van den Beld (Jr., Voorhout, Netherlands) is second in program history with his 19 career assists.
  • Riley Aarbo (Jr., Sioux Falls, S.D.) is currently tied for the GPAC lead in assists (7), while Luc Roelofs (Sr., Balgoij, Netherlands) is tied for second (6).
  • The Raider offense leads the conference in goals scored (56).
SCOUTING THE MUSTANGS
  • Morningside has had an exciting postseason thus far, winning a defensive battle over No. 5-seeded Hastings, 1-0, and advancing on penalty kicks over top-seeded Briar Cliff in the semifinals.
  • Timon Koerber leads the Mustangs in goal, only allowing six goals on the season for a goals against average of 0.46.
  • The sophomore keeper was named GPAC Defensive Player of the Week in Week 6.
  • The Mustangs are led offensively by Jona Fischer and Levi Von Hagen, each scoring five goals this year.
RAIDERS IN THE POSTSEASON
  • All time, the Raiders have a postseason record of 15-23, going 15-21 in the conference tournament.
  • Under head coach Dan Swier, Northwestern is 9-14 in postseason play, holding a 7-4 record in home GPAC tournament matches.
  • Swier has guided the Raiders to 12-straight GPAC tournament appearances (2011-23).
TICKET INFORMATION
Admission will be charged at the NWC Soccer Complex. There is not an advance ticketing option, all tickets are sold at the gate.

Adults will be charged $10, K-College students will be charged $3, and children under the Kindergarten age will have no charge. All GPAC students will receive free admittance to the matches with the showing of their institutional ID. All faculty and staff at GPAC schools will be required to pay for entry, per the conference office.
