Three Men’s Tennis Athletes Earn All-Conference

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – The Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) announced the men's tennis All-Conference selections for 2022 earlier today, May 13.

The Raiders had three athletes selected with two being both singles and doubles selections. Head coach Monte Tilgner stated, "I was so happy to four (positions) on the all-conference teams. The conference was significantly better than the past few years, which made the competition for all-conference very challenging. The guys worked very hard this year and it was great to see the conference coaches recognizing their play."

BRIAN VANDENBERG – ALL-CONFERENCE (SINGLES) Brian Vanden Berg_2021
Brian VandenBerg (Jr., Mason City, Iowa) played exclusively in the No. 1 singles position for the Raiders and picked up nine wins this season. This is VandenBerg's second All-Conference honor for his career.

Tilgner stated, "Brian is great at just grinding out matches. He gets everything back and is so smart on the court. Brian is great at finding his opponents weaknesses, and then exploiting them. He is very competitive and always works hard in practice. Brian has always been a quiet leader, but this year as a captain, he became more of a vocal leader which was important."

DAVID BOMGAARS – HONORABLE MENTION (SINGLES) David Bomgaars_2021
David Bomgaars (Fr., Aurora, Colo.) picks up his first All-Conference honor in his first season at Northwestern. He played in the No. 2 singles position for the entirety of the season for the Raiders and led the team in wins with 13.

Tilgner stated, "David has a very powerful game and is at his best when he is playing with that power and has the swagger that he shows in practice. He has probably the biggest serve in the conference, and he will be even more of a force next year! To make honorable mention at No. 2 singles as a freshman is very impressive! The ceiling is the limit for David!"

COLLIN HARMELINK – HONORABLE MENTION (SINGLES) Collin Harmelink_2021
Collin Harmelink (Sioux Falls, S.D.) finishes his freshman campaign with an overall record of 12-6, he played in both the No. 3 and No. 4 positions this season. This is Harmelink's first All-Conference honor.

Coach Tilgner commented, "Collin has the best hands of anyone on our team! He makes some unbelievable shots at the net. He improved greatly during the year, and especially when he started to play with more power and mix in the touch shots. He has great potential and I look forward to seeing him grow as a player."

VANDENBERG & BOMGAARS – ALL-CONFERENCE (DOUBLES)
VandenBerg and Bomgaars pick up their second awards on the season being selected for All-Conference on the doubles side. As a pair they played the entire season together and finished with a 13-4 record.

Coach Tilgner said, "Brain and David play very well together and it will be even better next year! They run quite a few different patterns to keep their opponents off balance and take advantage of David's big serve. Their games complement each other well and make for a great doubles team. I was so happy to see them make First Team, as that means they were only behind Midland and Doane, and our conference was so good this year."

UNDER TILGNER...
With this season's honorees Coach Tilgner has now coached three different All-Conference athletes. VandenBerg was an All-Conference selection in 2021. Tilgner's players have accumulated five total honors.
