Northwestern Opens League Play on the Road in Nebraska

Raiders visit Omaha and Crete this week

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – The Northwestern College women's basketball team (4-0, 0-0 GPAC) hits the road for Nebraska to start a three-game road trip to open up Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) play this week, visiting the College of Saint Mary in Omaha on Wednesday and Doane in Crete on Saturday.

THE SHOOTAROUND
  • Northwestern has started 4-0 in back-to-back seasons under head coach Kristin Rotert.
  • Rotert won her first-career league-opener last season with a 67-59 road win also at CSM.
  • Dating back to the 2005-06 season, NWC is 9-8 in GPAC Openers.
  • Through four games, the Raiders lead the GPAC in 3-pt % (36.7), free throw % (80.4), opponent's points per game (50.5), opponent's field goal % (32.7), and tied for first in steals per game (11.5).
  • Three Raiders sit averaging double figures through the first four games of the season: Molly Schany (16.8), Maddie Jones (15.5), and Taylor VanderVelde (11.8).
  • Schany joined the 400-rebound club with her first rebound in the 99-54 win at Bethel.
TAYLOR VANDERVELDE RECORDS 1,000 CAREER POINTS
  • With her 14th point of the Trinity Christian game on Saturday, Taylor VanderVelde scored her 1,000th career point as a Red Raider.
  • She becomes the 36th women's basketball player to notch 1,000+ career points.
DEFENSE…DOMINANT
  • Northwestern has played 16 quarters of basketball this season and in six of them an opponent has been unable to score double figures for the quarter.
  • NWC shut down Tabor offensively, holding the Bluejays to single digits in the first three quarters in the 61-39 win.
  • Twice the Raiders have held opponents to under 30% shooting (Bethel, Tabor) and two more under 40% (Dickinson State, Trinity Christian).
SERIES HISTORY – COLLEGE OF SAINT MARY
  • Northwestern and CSM have met 22 times in series history, Northwestern winning 12 straight.
  • NWC has a 9-1 record in Omaha against the Flames, the only loss coming back on Nov. 19, 2014.
  • Since CSM joined the GPAC in the 2015-16 academic year, the Raiders are 13-1 against the Flames in league games.
SERIES HISTORY – DOANE
  • Northwestern and Doane are set to meet for the 60th time on Saturday in Crete, Neb.
  • The Raiders lead the all-time series 36-23, winning the last six.
  • In Crete, Northwestern has won the last three meetings dating back to Jan. 4, 2020.
SCOUTING THE FLAMES
  • The College of Saint Mary enters the game with a 2-3 overall record, dropping three-straight games.
  • The Flames fell to the University of Jamestown in their GPAC Opener on Saturday, 67-46 in Omaha.
  • Sole returning All-Conference performer from last season is Sidney Anderson (Honorable Mention), who is averaging 7.5ppg and 5.5rpg this season.
  • Joining Anderson as key returners this season are Madelyn Turner (leading the team in scoring and rebounding) and Clare Lewandowski.
SCOUTING THE TIGERS
  • Doane enters the week with a 3-0 (1-0 GPAC) record, downing Mount Marty 86-53 in their GPAC Opener on Saturday, Nov. 12.
  • Doane is led by fourth-year head coach Ryan Baumgartner.
  • The Tigers face Hastings on Wednesday, while NWC is in Omaha.
  • Two Tigers average double digits in Mak Hatcliff (27.0ppg) and Olivia Nall (13.7ppg). Hatcliff currently leads the GPAC in scoring by 6.0ppg.
  • Despite a close one-point 66-65 win at Park (Mo.) to open the 2022-23 campaign, Doane has scored 85+ points in their last two games; downing Peru State (88-78) and Mount Marty (86-53).
Up Next: The Raiders will conclude the three-game road swing with a trip to Fremont, Neb. on Tuesday, November 22 for a clash with the Warriors of Midland University.
