Raiders Use Third-Quarter Run to Complete Opening Win

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Northwestern held a double-digit lead for most of the second half, defeating Mount Mercy 99-76 on Saturday evening.

Haevyn Ranschau opened the game with a three-pointer, and after the Mustangs went ahead 4-3, Hudsyn Ranschau answered with a triple at 8:02 to put the Raiders back in front 6-4. The Mustangs tied it at 13-13 with 3:42 left, but Margo Schuiteman followed with a layup and free throw to restore the Red Raiders' edge at 27-23 after 10 minutes.

The Red Raiders built their advantage early in the second quarter, getting consecutive baskets from Allison Piercy and a Haevyn Ranschau make from downtown to reach 34-23 with 8:44 left. The offense stayed connected throughout the quarter, finishing with seven assists on nine made field goals, including feeds from Metzger, Oetker, Hudsyn Ranschau and Piercy on scoring plays. The Raiders led 43-31 after Oetker's layup with 3:51 remaining, but Mount Mercy worked back to 45-43 on a three-pointer with under a minute in the half. Northwestern answered in the closing minute with Metzger's layup off Piercy's assist and Haevyn Ranschau's trey off an assist from Hudsyn Ranschau with five seconds left, taking a 50-43 lead into halftime.

Northwestern's biggest third-quarter separation came from 5:44 to 2:25, when they scored 17 unanswered points to turn a 59-52 lead into a 76-52 advantage. Earlier, after the Mustangs pulled within 52-49, Emily TerWee hit a jumper and Hudsyn Ranschau scored the Raiders' next eight points, including two triples, to move the lead to 62-52. Northwestern kept that stretch going with six consecutive made field goals from 4:58 to 2:25, with Oetker assisting three of them and Piercy scoring the final five points of the run. The Raiders shot 11-for-19 in the quarter, connected four times from beyond the arc, forced nine turnovers and outscored the Mustangs 30-13 to enter the fourth ahead 80-56.

After the Mustangs turned two Raiders turnovers into baskets to open the fourth, Piercy answered with a three-pointer off Oetker's assist, Haevyn Ranschau added two free throws, and TerWee scored twice, including a layup assisted by Piercy that made it 89-62 with 6:46 left. Rachel Schany steadied another Mustangs push with a triple off an assist from Schuiteman at 4:48, and Haevyn Ranschau followed with a trey off an assist from Hudsyn Ranschau before blocking a shot on the next Mount Mercy possession.
