Northwestern Takes Down Viterbo in Home Opener

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – Northwestern impressed in front of the home crowd, defeating Viterbo (Wis.) 90-68 to move to 2-0.

The Raiders built the first quarter around an 11-0 run to open the game, holding the V-Hawks scoreless until the 5:16 mark while Emily TerWee scored three layups and Hudsyn Ranschau added a three-pointer with three assists in the stretch. The defensive start included turnovers forced by TerWee and Rachel Schany, plus blocks from Addy Oetker and Margo Schuiteman before Schuiteman's layup made it 11-0 with 6:02 left. The Red Raiders then stretched the floor, getting triples from Haevyn Ranschau, Oetker, Allison Piercy and Ranschau again during a 15-point surge that pushed the score to 26-11. The home side shot 11-for-17 in the quarter, made five of nine from beyond the arc and assisted on 10 of its 11 baskets, while turning seven Viterbo turnovers into 13 points. TerWee added another layup at 1:24, and the Raiders finished the first quarter ahead 28-15.

A 15-0 stretch in the final five minutes of the half held the V-Hawks scoreless for 11 straight possessions during the stretch, turning a 40-24 lead into 55-24. Earlier, the Raiders built their separation from the arc, with Haevyn Ranschau, Piercy and Hudsyn Ranschau combining for four treys. The Red Raiders also created chances defensively, getting steals from Oetker, Piercy and Avery DeHaan, while Oetker added a block and TerWee controlled several defensive rebounds during the V-Hawks' drought. The Raiders shot 11-for-19 with nine assists and no turnovers in the quarter, outscored the V-Hawks 29-11 in the segment to go into halftime ahead 57-26.

The Raiders' third-quarter separation came during a defensive stretch that kept the V-Hawks off the scoreboard for nearly four and a half minutes while Northwestern put together nine straight points to move ahead 71-32. Earlier, Haevyn Ranschau answered a Viterbo basket with a three-pointer, and Schany finished inside off a TerWee assist to keep the Raiders in control at 62-30. The push included three Piercy free throws, a Hudsyn Ranschau jumper assisted by Oetker Ranschau free throw and an Oetker trey off an assist from Jaelye Woudstra after Oetker's steal. The V-Hawks scored the next eight points to reach 71-40, but Hudsyn Ranschau responded with a triple, then turned a steal into a layup as the Raiders finished the quarter leading 76-42.

Northwestern protected its cushion through the fourth quarter and closed out a 90-68 win, even as the V-Hawks outscored them 26-14 in the final 10 minutes. Earlier, Piercy's steal helped set up a Hudsyn Ranschau shot from downtown, assisted by Piercy, that gave the Raiders a 79-44 lead with 8:11 left. After the V-Hawks answered with back-to-back triples, Oetker came up with a steal and layup, then later hit two free throws and assisted Aubrey Schwieso's three-pointer after an Aubrey Metzger steal to make it 86-55 with 4:41 remaining.
