Men's Tennis Victorious in First Match of the Season

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – The Northwestern College men's tennis team (1-0, 0-0 GPAC) began the 2022-23 season on a winning note, downing Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) foe Morningside (1-1, 0-0 GPAC) at the NWC Tennis Courts in a non-conference clash.

Northwestern took what proved to be a crucial team doubles point, which would swing the favor towards the side of the Red Raiders after both sides took three singles matches. The Raiders took the No. 1 and No. 2 slots in the doubles competition, winning 6-4 and 6-1.

It was a great win for us against a very good Morningside team!  I was even more pleased in the fact that we had a tough match against an (NCAA) Division II program in Augustana (S.D.) the night before," noted head coach Monte Tilgner. "Brian (VandenBerg) and Albert (Segura) used one break a serve to secure the win and the doubles point with 6-4 win. David and Leandro finished off their opponents early in the number 2 doubles, easily at 6-1."

Sophomore Albert Segura (Las Palmas, Spain) dropped his first match as a Red Raider in a heartbreaker three-set match to Morningside's No. 1 Mark Trenkle. Northwestern would pick up Segura, winning No. 2 through No. 4 as returners Brian VandenBerg (Sr., Mason City, Iowa) and David Bomgaars (So., Aurora, Colo.) both picked up wins. Bomgaars won in straight sets at No. 3 and VandenBerg took a hard fought three-set victory at No. 2. Freshman Leandro Costa (Fr., Caratinga, Brazil) took home his first-career win in a Red Raider uniform at No. 4 (3-6, 6-1, 6-4).

"That (doubles) point proved to be pivotal as both teams won (three) matches in the singles. David (Bomgaars) played a really good match and won 6-3, 6-2. Brian (VandenBerg) and Leandro (Costa) both came out with crucial (three) set victories," said Tilgner. "Albert (Segura) played for a great (first) set, but unfortunately when it went to a (third) set he started to cramp up and eventually lost in a tie break."

Results of the match can be found linked above, along with the season stats for the Red Raiders.

Up Next: Northwestern will be back in action in Orange City on Tuesday, October 11 another GPAC foe in the Mount Marty Lancers. The match is slated to begin at 5:30 p.m. at the NWC Tennis Courts.
