Raiders, Chargers Meet For Second Time

The teams played to a 0-0, double overtime tie on Sept. 11

Game Time...For the second time in nine days, Northwestern and Briar Cliff are paired against each other in women's soccer. The teams will play on Saturday, Sept. 19 in Sioux City, Iowa beginning at 1pm; this match-up will be a GPAC contest. Northwestern brings a 0-1-1 overall record into the weekend while Briar Cliff is 1-0-1.

All-Time...Northwestern is 9-17-2 all-time against Briar Cliff  in a rivaly that began in 1995, the first season of women's soccer at NWC. The Raiders are winless in their last four games against BCU and are 5-4-1 in their last 10 matches against BCU. 

Last Time vs BCU... Northwestern College and Briar Cliff played to a double overtime, scoreless draw in a non-conference match played Sept. 11 at the Raider soccer complex. Both teams were making their season debut. 

Kaelin Alons totaled 14 saves in just her second start in goal for the Raiders.Head Coach Ben Karnish's squad accounted for eight shots on goal, two each by Maria Lopes, Julie Dunlap and Emily Hurley. 

Briar Cliff mustered 14 shots on goal, led by Bailee Hackley with three and both Flor Suarez and Gemma White with two. Rudy Campa stopped eight Northwestern shots in goal for the Chargers.

Following the tie against the Raiders, Briar Cliff came back with an impressive 5-0 win on the road against Dordt in the GPAC opener for both teams. Flor Suarez recorded a hat trick, scoring the first three goals against the Defenders. Taylor Hill added one goal and one assist while Gisselle Jimenez scored the final goal with five minutes left in the game. 

Ruby Campa stopped two shots to record her second shutout of the season. Briar Cliff outshot Dordt 12-2. 

Paul Cox is in his third season as the head of the Chargers women's soccer program after being hired in January of 2018. Formerly an assistant at Midland, Cox returns seven starters, 12 players from his 2019 squad.

The Raiders were shutout by College of Saint Mary (Neb.) 2-0 in the GPAC opener for both teams played Wednesday night, Sept. 16, in Orange City. Both goals were scored by the Flames in the first half and Northwestern was outshot 16-2 for the match. Molly Ryan and Katie Jacob tallied the shots on goal and Kaelin Alons recorded 14 saves for the second consecutive match. 

Karnish owns a 65-59-12 overall record in his seven seasons as head coach, owning the most wins and best win percentage in program history. Raider teams have finished among the top five in the GPAC in five of his seven seasons.
