Raiders Secure Win at Home Opener

ORANGE CITY, Iowa — Northwestern defeated Viterbo 3-1 on Friday. The Raiders held the V-Hawks scoreless in the second half, including a five-action defensive stretch from 77:18 to 82:09 with the score at 3-1.
 
After the V-Hawks put an early shot high, the Raiders struck at 5:32 when Hannah Gordon scored off an assist from Aliza Edwards to put the Raiders ahead 1-0. The Red Raiders kept pressure on over the next few minutes, getting shots from Olivia Regnerus, Madison Anderson, Avery McEntee and Lucy Staines. The V-Hawks answered with chances from two of their players before scoring at 18:16 to tie the match at 1-1. Ella Top saved another Viterbo shot in the 26th minute, and the Raiders created the final two attempts of the half on blocked shots by Marissa Talamantes and Addison Westergard before the teams went into halftime tied 1-1.
 
Top made an early second-half save at 46:57, and the Raiders moved ahead at 50:51 when Edwards scored off Maddie Overton's assist for a 2-1 lead. The V-Hawks answered with pressure over the next several minutes, but Top saved attempts at 50:57 and 53:36 and stopped a team shot at 55:32 around two V-Hawks corner kicks. The Red Raiders created chances through Adah Baron, a team shot, and Kira Roberts before Mya Cole's corner helped lead into Overton's goal from Cole at 75:40, extending the lead to 3-1. The V-Hawks generated a late corner and four shots from 77:18 to 82:09, but Top added two more saves and the Raiders closed out the half to finish a 3-1 win.
