Raiders Drop A Tight Battle to Hastings

Sioux City, Iowa - Northwestern fell to Hastings 4-3 on Friday. The Red Raiders secured victories in singles matches at the No. 1, No. 2, and No. 3 positions but could not overcome the Broncos' edge in doubles play, which proved decisive.

Northwestern dropped the doubles point to Hastings after a tough competition. Matilde Di Martino and Pietra Ferreira secured a victory at No. 1 doubles with a 7-6 win over Josline Carter and Victoria Harris. However, Hastings clinched the doubles point with wins at No. 2 doubles, where Cara Ansbach and Lexi Benson defeated Madalyn Kolb and Bryn Higginbotham, 6-2, and at No. 3 doubles as Paige Willcoxon and Kayleigh Cetak won 6-3 against Alloree Else and Emily Westenberg.

In singles, the Raiders' Matilde Di Martino swiftly overcame Josline Carter at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-2, leveling the score. Ferreira continued Northwestern's momentum with a straight-sets victory at No. 2 singles, winning 6-3, 7-5 against Victoria Harris. Else pushed the Red Raiders ahead by defeating Paige Willcoxon at No. 3 singles in a three-set battle, 1-6, 6-3, 7-5.

Despite the early singles success, the Broncos responded with wins that turned the tide. Ansbach outlasted Kolb at No. 4 singles, taking the match 7-5, 3-6, 11-9 in a contest that featured a tense tiebreaker. Hastings then secured victories at No. 5 and No. 6 singles. Lexi Benson topped Higginbotham, 7-5, 6-3, and Abby Harveson defeated Westenberg, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2, leading Hastings to a 4-3 overall win.
