High-Powered Offense Leads to Game 2 Win in Sioux City

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – Northwestern faced a competitive doubleheader against Briar Cliff on Friday, with the first game ending in a 3-1 loss and the second game showcasing a strong comeback for a 10-7 victory.

How It Happened
Northwestern fell to Briar Cliff with a final score of 3-1 in the first of a twin bill on Friday.

BCU took an early lead in the first inning when Cael Walrod scored on a throw during Kaden Allred's steal of second base, giving them a 1-0 advantage.

BCU added another two runs to their lead, as in the fifth inning when Kaden Allred, pinch running for Cade Marquardt, scored on a double by Grant Devecsery, making it 3-0 through five.

The Red Raiders responded in the sixth inning as Devin Dirkx drew a walk and was replaced by pinch runner Tyler Schroeder, who later crossed home on Grant Rychnovsky's RBI single to center field, cutting the deficit to 3-1.

The Chargers maintained their lead through the final frames as BCU secured the victory over the Raiders with a final score of 3-1.

How It Happened
Northwestern bounced back to secure a 10-7 victory over Briar Cliff on Friday at Bishop Mueller Complex, highlighted by two home runs and a four-run eighth inning.

Calab Caciari hit a solo home run in the top of the second inning, giving the Red Raiders an early lead and Caciari's first long ball in a Raider uniform. Ranier Castillo followed with a single and later scored on a groundout by Nikolai Wede, putting the Raiders up 2-0 through two innings.

In the third, Grant Guidry singled and advanced to third base, eventually scoring on a single by Castillo. Caciari also scored on a double from Kevin Rubio, extending the Red Raiders' lead to 4-0. The Chargers responded in their half of the third with a two-RBI triple by Cade Marquardt and an RBI single by Raenan Padilla, narrowing the margin to 4-3 before tying the game in the fourth inning with a sacrifice fly.

In the fifth inning, the Chargers took the lead with three runs highlighted by a two-RBI single from Nico Sall, putting the home side ahead 7-4.

Northwestern cut the deficit in the sixth inning when Castillo doubled and scored on a double by Rubio. Rubio's pinch runner, Bryce Click, later scored on a balk to bring the Raiders within one, at 7-6.

The eighth inning saw the Raiders reclaim the lead. Wede hit a three-run home run, and Jack Craig added an RBI single, putting the Red Raiders ahead for good, 10-7.

Game Notes:
  • Nikolai Wede homered for the seventh time this season, which is tied for second in the GPAC.
  • He drove in four runs and extended his reached base streak to 20 games.
  • Calab Caciari hit his first home run as a Red Raider.
  • Ranier Castillo and Grant Guidry both recorded three-hit days.
  • Kevin Rubio notched two hits and an RBI.
  • Brody Ayers had a 2-for-3 day at the plate and picked up his fifth save.
  • Peyton Montecinos got his third win of the season, striking out three in three innings.
