High-Scoring Sweep Highlights Baseball’s Saturday

SIOUX CENTER, Iowa – Northwestern improved to 3-1 on the weekend with a high-scoring sweep of Dordt in Sioux Center.

How It Happened
Northwestern secured a commanding 13-2 victory over Dordt in game 1 on Saturday. The Red Raiders' offense was highlighted by three home runs and seven walks, while Devin Dirkx commanded on the mound with a complete-game win.

Northwestern opened strong with a three-run homer from Grant Rychnovsky, bringing in Ranier Castillo and Grant Guidry in the top of the first inning. The Defenders were unable to respond, ending the first with the Raiders leading 3-0.

In the third inning, Guidry added to the Raiders' lead with a solo home run. Dordt was held scoreless, leaving the score at 4-1 in favor of the Raiders.

The fourth inning saw Northwestern extend its advantage with five runs. Nikolai Wede hit a two-RBI double, and Devin Dirkx followed with an RBI double of his own. Brody Ayers contributed with an RBI walk, and a sacrifice fly by Guidry scored another run, increasing the Raiders' lead to 9-1.

Dordt scored an unearned run in the fifth inning, but the Red Raiders maintained a 9-2 lead.

In the sixth, Northwestern's offense was highlighted by Dirkx's two-run homer, pushing the score to 12-2.

The Raiders capped off the scoring in the seventh inning with a sacrifice fly by Kevin Rubio, bringing the game to its final score. The Defenders were unable to add any further runs, resulting in the Raiders' decisive 13-2 victory.

How It Happened
The Raiders punctuated the doubleheader sweep a 15-9 victory, highlighted by the Red Raiders' six doubles and two home runs.

Northwestern opened the game with a strong offensive showing in the first inning. Grant Guidry singled and advanced on a hit by pitch, setting the stage for Ranier Castillo, who reached on an error, allowing Guidry to score. Jack Craig followed with an RBI single, and Calab Caciari's two-RBI double extended the lead to 4-0. Dordt put up three runs in the home half to make it 4-3.

In the third inning, Northwestern extended the lead. Castillo doubled, and Craig walked, setting up Bryce Click's two-RBI single. Dordt added another three runs in the bottom of the third, knotting it at 6-6 before Devin Dirkx's solo home run in the fifth put the Red Raiders back in the lead, 7-6.

Northwestern extended its lead in the sixth inning as Click walked and scored on an error, followed by Isaac Short's RBI double. Nikolai Wede then hit a two-run homer, increasing the lead to 10-6.

In the seventh inning, Caciari walked and scored on Click's RBI double. Wede's RBI double brought in another run, making it 12-7.

The ninth inning saw the Raiders add on a trio of insurance runs. Caciari singled and scored on an error, followed by RBI singles from Brody Ayers and Dirkx to take a 15-7 lead into Dordt's final frame.

Despite allowing a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth, the Red Raiders held firm to earn a 15-9 victory over the Defenders.

Game Notes:
  • Bryce Click had a 3-for-4 day, doubling twice and driving in three runs.
  • Click also scored twice and walked once.
  • Nikolai Wede homered and doubled, going 2-for-6 with three RBIs and a run.
  • Devin Dirkx and Calab Caciari drove in two runs each.
  • Dirkx hit his second home run in as many games.
  • Brody Ayers threw 2.0 innings in relief, striking out three batters.
  • Jacob Lewis and Quintyn Vold both threw an inning of no-hit work.
Up Next: The Raiders will play on their home field for the first time this season, hosting a four-game series against Hastings next Friday and Saturday.
