Hot Shooting Propels Raiders to Victory

YANKTON, S.D. — Northwestern College (12-11, 8-9 GPAC) edged Mount Marty University (12-11, 7-10 GPAC), 62-61, at Cimpl Arena, securing the win despite a fourth-quarter surge by the hosts. The Red Raiders shot 50.0% from beyond the arc and held a 48-26 rebounding advantage.

Northwestern initiated the first quarter with a strong start, as Margo Schuiteman connected on a 3-pointer just 24 seconds in, assisted by Allison Piercy. The Red Raiders maintained momentum with effective play inside the paint, scoring 8 points, highlighted by Schuiteman's layup at the 38-second mark. The Raiders also capitalized on defensive efforts, accumulating 2 blocks and 2 steals, which helped to keep the Lancers' offense in check.

Despite some back-and-forth exchanges, the Raiders held a slight edge in field goal shooting, making 6 of 17 attempts, while limiting the Lancers to 4 of 14 from the field. A key moment came when Schuiteman again scored a crucial 3-pointer with 2:39 remaining, regaining the lead for the Red Raiders. The quarter concluded with Northwestern narrowly ahead, 14-13, as they entered the next quarter with a slim advantage.

Northwestern began the second quarter with a swift momentum shift, regaining the lead after the Lancers briefly went ahead by two points with a 3-pointer. Key defensive plays, including two blocks and two steals, helped the Raiders maintain control. Piercy's crucial layup tied the game, and her subsequent 3-pointer put Northwestern ahead, contributing significantly to the team's scoring run.

As the quarter progressed, the Red Raiders extended their lead with effective shooting, hitting four out of six 3-point attempts. Ashtyn Wobig and Jenna Kluxdal both added to the scoring with successful 3-pointers and layups, further increasing the margin. Northwestern closed the quarter with a nine-point lead, leading Mount Marty 33–26.

Northwestern maintained momentum at the start of the third quarter with a 3-pointer from Kylie Foss, assisted by Wobig, extending their lead to 10 points. Emily TerWee added a jumper, pushing the lead to a quarter-high 12 points by the 8:35 mark. Despite turnovers from both sides, the Raiders' defense held strong, limiting the Lancers to just two field goals in the quarter.

Mount Marty responded with a series of free throws and a 3-pointer by Claire Tereshinski, cutting the deficit to three points at one stage. However, Northwestern's Kluxdal and Piercy contributed key baskets, with Piercy's 3-pointer at 2:57 re-establishing a comfortable eight-point margin. The Raiders closed the quarter leading 45-36, leveraging defensive rebounds and free throws to maintain control.

Northwestern maintained its lead throughout the fourth quarter, despite the Lancers closing the gap. Wobig hit a crucial 3-pointer early at 9:28, extending the Red Raiders' advantage. Northwestern's defense was key, with TerWee securing several important rebounds to limit the Lancers' scoring opportunities.

Despite Mount Marty's late efforts, Northwestern responded with consistent scoring. Foss and Ellie Karolevitz contributed layups and three-pointers, helping to keep Northwestern ahead.
