Raiders Continue Winning Ways At Home

ORANGE CITY, Iowa — Northwestern College (14-11, 10-9 GPAC) defeated Morningside University (13-13, 8-12 GPAC), 71-59, at the Bultman Center, securing a 17-point lead in the fourth quarter. The Raiders' strong rebounding performance, a 47-32 edge, contributed significantly to their victory.

The first quarter began with a balanced start between the Red Raiders and the Mustangs, as both teams exchanged early baskets. Northwestern gained momentum with a successful layup by Emily TerWee, followed by a 3-pointer from Margo Schuiteman to take the lead. The Raiders maintained pressure with strong rebounding and timely assists, including a series of plays that extended their early lead.

Northwestern capitalized on multiple turnovers, leading to a scoring run that featured contributions from Aubrey Schwieso, who added a pair of fast break layups, and Ellie Karolevitz, who sunk a free throw. Ashtyn Wobig's jumper and Allison Piercy's layup further extended the lead to seven points. By the end of the quarter, Northwestern led 14-7, setting a strong foundation for the next phase of the game.

Northwestern opened the second quarter with a strong defensive presence, highlighted by Piercy's steal that led to a Wobig three-pointer, extending the home team's lead. The Raiders maintained pressure with effective plays in the paint, including a layup by Karolevitz at 6:13. This effort was complemented by Maddie Pottebaum's layup at 5:55, which pushed the lead to 12 points.

Morningside responded with a series of successful shots, including a three-pointer by Clancy Brown at 5:41, narrowing the gap. Despite this, Northwestern's balanced attack, with contributions from Jenna Kluxdal and Schuiteman, helped sustain their lead. The quarter concluded with both teams adding 13 points to their totals, keeping the Raiders ahead 30-23 at halftime.

Northwestern began the third quarter by extending its lead, highlighted by an early 3-pointer from Wobig and a series of successful layups from TerWee and Piercy. This offensive momentum helped the Raiders build a substantial 16-point lead midway through the period.

Morningside responded with a series of baskets to cut into the Raiders' advantage, but Northwestern maintained strong on the boards, limiting the Mustangs' second-chance opportunities. Key assists from Kylie Foss and continued scoring contributions, including a pivotal 3-pointer from Piercy, helped the Raiders sustain their lead.

Northwestern closed the third quarter with a 54–45 advantage, maintaining control despite Morningside's efforts to narrow the gap.

The Raiders began the fourth quarter with strong momentum, highlighted by back-to-back 3-pointers from Wobig, assisted by Schuiteman and TerWee. This scoring surge extended the Raiders' lead early in the period.

Northwestern maintained its lead through effective scoring, including a layup by Kluxdal and a 3-pointer with an assist from Wobig at 5:23, pushing the lead to 67–50. Despite several turnovers, the Raiders' defense held firm, with key defensive stops late in the game.

The quarter closed with Northwestern maintaining its advantage, leading Morningside 71–59 at the final buzzer.
