Two Grand Slams Round Out the Raiders' Afternoon

SIOUX CENTER, Iowa - Two wins for Northwestern as they squeak out a 3-2 victory over Dickinson State in their rematch from two weeks prior before unleashing their freshmen's bats in the 16-1 victory over Haskell.

Game 1: NWC 3 - Dickinson State 2
Win:
Allison Koontz (8-1)
Loss: H. Fath (2-1)
Save: Tatum Schmalbeck (4)

How It Happened:
The game started strong for the Red Raiders in the first inning when Rylee Bomgaars walked and later stole second. Tatum Schmalbeck singled, positioning Bomgaars at third. Alyssa Gross then reached on a fielder's choice, allowing Bomgaars to score. Schmalbeck scored on the subsequent throw, putting the Raiders ahead 2-0 after the first inning.

In the second inning, the Raiders extended their lead. Cassidy Gors singled and later scored on a bases-loaded walk to Sydney Jacobs. The inning ended with the Raiders leading 3-0.

The game remained scoreless until the sixth inning when Dickinson State responded with two solo home runs, narrowing the gap.

In the seventh inning, the Raiders held the Blue Hawks scoreless to secure the 3-2 win.

Game Notes
  • Cassidy Gors went two-for-two at the plate while adding two stolen bases.
  • Tatum Schmalbeck was the only other Raider to notch multiple hits (2).
  • Allison Koontz went five innings before giving up the lone runs of the contest.

  • Rylee Bombaars stole her eleventh base of the season.
Game 2: NWC 16 - Haskell 1
Win:
Audrie Kohl (2-2)
Loss: C. Farrow (0-5)

How It Happened:
In the second inning, Northwestern's offense exploded with seven runs. The scoring began with a triple by Paige Kingery, who scored on a sacrifice by Cassidy Gors. Kavri Van Kekerix's single brought in Faith Kacmarynski, followed by Allison Koontz's grand slam. Haskell would score on a bases-loaded error as the Raiders led 7-1 after the second.

The fourth inning saw the Raiders add another run to their total. Ava Gross singled and advanced to third on a sacrifice, scoring on Gors' single.

Northwestern's dominance continued in the fifth inning, scoring eight more runs. Tatum Schmalbeck doubled to drive in two runs, before a wild pitch and Kacmarynski RBI single added two more. Van Kekerix hit the second grand slam of the contest, bringing in the final four runs. This offensive surge sealed the game, leading to the final score of 16-1.
