Raiders Bounce Back to Split Saturday's Games

SIOUX CENTER, Iowa - Northwestern rounded out their non-conference start to the season splitting a pair of games on Saturday. The Raiders would first fall 14-8 to William Penn before bouncing back and defeating Viterbo 10-2.

Game 1: NWC 8 - William Penn 14
Win: S. Rheenan (3-0)
Loss: Allison Koontz (7-2)

How It Happened:
Northwestern opened with a strong first inning, matching William Penn's four runs. Rylee Bomgaars walked and scored on a single by Tatum Schmalbeck. Schmalbeck would reach third on the throws and scored on a fielder's choice by Ava Gross. Gross later stole second, and Paige Kingery drove her in with a single, advancing to second on the throw. Kingery scored on a wild pitch, leaving the score tied at 4-4 after one inning.

In the second inning, the Raiders edged ahead with a run scored by Kavri Van Kekerix, who reached on an error and later scored on another error. The Statesmen regained the lead in the third inning with two runs, making it 6-5. In the fourth, they extended their lead with three additional runs, bringing the score to 9-5.

In the fifth inning, Northwestern narrowed the lead as Kingery doubled and scored on a groundout by Jenny Luevano, followed by Cassidy Gors scoring unearned on an error. However, William Penn added three more runs, leading 12-7. The sixth inning saw the Raiders add one more run as Sydney Jacobs scored on a single by Allison Koontz. The Statesmen countered with two runs, bringing the score to 14-8, where it would stay through the final inning.

Game Notes
  • Tatum Schmalbeck and Paige Kingery both notched three hits in their four at bats.
  • Schmalbeck and Kingery would both hit a double as well.
  • Seven separate Raiders recorded a run; Kingery scored twice.
  • Ava Gross, Kavri Van Kekerix, and Kingery all stole a base.
  • Each of those three also recorded an error.
  • William Penn outhit Northwestern 18 to 11.

How It Happened:
The game remained scoreless until the third inning when Sydney Jacobs pinch ran for Jenny Luevano, advancing to third on a sacrifice bunt by Cassidy Gors, and scoring on a fielder's choice. Rylee Bomgaars later scored on a throw, giving the Raiders a 2-0 lead.

In the fourth inning, the Raiders capitalized on a Viterbo error. Myla Murphy scored, followed by Bomgaars and Gors on an error by the shortstop, increasing the lead to 5-0. The sixth inning saw further success for the Raiders as Jacobs scored on a sacrifice fly by Tatum Schmalbeck, followed by Bomgaars scoring on a single by Ava Gross, extending the lead to 7-0.

Northwestern added three more runs in the seventh. Faith Kacmarynski scored on a fielder's choice, followed by Bomgaars and Gors, bringing the score to 10-0. The V-Hawks managed to score two runs in the bottom of the seventh, but it was not enough to challenge the Raiders' lead.

Game Notes
  • A stellar game for Rylee Bomgaars who had three hits and scored four runs.
  • Allison Koontz also had a multi-hit game with two.
  • Bomgaars and Kavri Van Kekerix added a stolen base each.
  • Northwestern's four pitchers combined for just one strikeout.
  • The Raiders registered eight hits and eight walks with just three strikeouts.
  • Ava Gross has at least one hit in all but two games this season.
