Northwestern Sweeps Hastings in Road Match

HASTINGS, Neb. – No. 3 Northwestern remained unbeaten in GPAC play with a sweep of Hastings on Friday night.

FINAL: NWC 3, HC 0 (25-11, 25-17, 25-19)

How It Happened
After the Broncos opened the set with a Mikah O'Neill kill, the Raiders answered with eight straight points, including three Stella Winterfeld kills and four Sidney Oostra service aces, to move ahead 8-1. The Broncos stopped the run on an attack error, but the Red Raiders pushed the score to 12-2 with a Winterfeld kill, a Nyah Potthoff ace, a Makenna Sutter attack error and a Halie Kapelke kill after the Broncos' second timeout. The Broncos put together short responses, including consecutive points to make it 17-6 and later points from a Red Raiders attack error and a Sutter kill to reach 21-10, but the Raiders answered with kills from Maddy Sampson and Aubrey De Groot. Potthoff followed De Groot's kill with a service ace, Winterfeld put the Red Raiders at set point at 24-10, and after a Sutter kill, Winterfeld closed the set 25-11.

The second set stayed tight into the middle stages, with the Raiders moving from a 12-11 edge to 16-11 on kills by Aubrey De Groot and Winterfeld and back-to-back Maggie Bloom service aces around a Broncos timeout. Hastings answered with Makenna Sutter kills on three of their next four points to get within 17-15, but Northwestern came back with a Jadyn Hofmeyer kill, a Winterfeld kill and an Ilse Benne attack error to lead 20-15. After a Raiders service error made it 20-16, Broncos service and attack errors and kills by Winterfeld and De Groot gave the Red Raiders set point at 24-16, and De Groot finished the set with a kill for a 25-17 win.

Northwestern scored first on a Madi Nemmers service ace, but Hastings moved ahead 7-3 behind kills from Kaleah Olson, Ilse Benne, Hailey Whitmarsh and Mikah O'Neill, plus a Benne ace. The Raiders worked back to an 8-8 tie on a Hofmeyer kill and later built a 13-10 lead with an Oostra ace and a block by Aubrey De Groot and Winterfeld before the Broncos cut it to 13-12. The Red Raiders answered with seven of the next eight points, getting kills from Winterfeld, De Groot and Kapelke and aces from Potthoff and Winterfeld to stretch the lead to 20-13. The Raiders stayed in front the rest of the set, reached set point at 24-18 on a Broncos attack error and closed the set 25-19 on a service error.
