Nebraska Road Trip Ends with a Raider Sweep

CRETE, Neb. — Northwestern (Iowa) swept Doane (Neb.) 3-0 on Saturday, taking the sets 25-8, 25-15, 25-16. The Red Raiders hit .402 with 48 kills and held the Tigers to a .107 hitting percentage in the win.
 
The Raiders won the first seven points of the opening set with Madi Nemmers serving, getting four kills from Stella Winterfeld, two from Maddy Sampson and a Sampson/Winterfeld block on a Tigers attack error. After a service error gave the Tigers their first point, Winterfeld added three more kills and Sidney Oostra served an ace as the Red Raiders stretched the score to 12-1. The Tigers later used two Brooke Larsen kills to move from 15-3 to 15-5, but the Raiders kept control with kills from Halie Kapelke and a Sampson/Kapelke block during the next stretch. Jadyn Hofmeyer and Sampson provided late kills, and Sampson delivered the final two points as the Red Raiders closed the set 25-8.
 
The Red Raiders built an early 4-1 lead, but the Tigers worked back to ties at 8-8, 9-9, 10-10 and 11-11 before moving in front 12-11. The Raiders answered with eight straight points, using a Hofmeyer kill, an Anni Wedgbury ace, four Aubree Shields kills, an Aubrey De Groot kill and a De Groot block to move ahead 19-12. After the Tigers stopped the run, the Red Raiders added a Tigers service error, a Bella Sysa block and two Sysa kills to reach 23-13, and Shields later closed the 25-15 set win with a kill from Oostra.
 
The Raiders started the third set with Sysa's kill, Nyah Potthoff's service ace and Shields' kill as part of a 4-0 start, but the Tigers scored the next five points to move ahead 5-4. The Raiders answered with a Tigers attack error, a Makenna Lilly kill and a Maggie Bloom ace to go back in front 7-5, then built the margin to 13-8 behind kills from Hofmeyer and Aubrey De Groot and a Tierney Huss ace. The Red Raiders pushed the lead to 18-10 on another Shields kill, and after the Tigers got within 21-14, the Raiders finished the set with kills by Lilly and Hofmeyer, including Hofmeyer's final swing for a 25-16 win.

Up Next: The Raiders return to Bultman for a big weekend of ranked matches. On Friday, October 9th, the 15th ranked Midland Warriors come to town. On Saturday, October 10th, the 2nd ranked Concordia Bulldogs return for the first time since the GPAC championship last year.
