Fourth Quarter Surge Comes Up Short

ORANGE CITY, Iowa — Northwestern College (9-8, 5-6 GPAC) came up short against Briar Cliff (IA) (13-4, 7-4 GPAC), falling 79-70. Despite a spirited fourth quarter surge that included a 15-0 run on five consecutive threes, the Red Raiders couldn't overcome their 22 turnovers, which translated into 24 points for the Chargers.

The Red Raiders started strong in the first quarter with Emily TerWee tying the game at two with an early layup. Ashtyn Wobig, who has scored at least 19 points in the last three games, briefly put Northwestern ahead with a three-pointer at 7:55, thanks to an assist from Allison Piercy. But Briar Cliff responded with a flurry of successful plays, including two three-pointers by Mallie McNair, to end the quarter with a commanding 15-point lead.

Northwestern worked hard to keep pace, with TerWee and Wobig adding baskets, but the Raiders' turnovers allowed the Chargers to widen their lead. The first quarter ended with Northwestern trailing 24-9, setting the stage for a tough battle ahead.

In the second quarter, Northwestern struggled to find their groove against the Chargers. Despite early efforts like TerWee's layup at 8:47, assisted by Kylie Foss, turnovers disrupted their rhythm. Ellie Karolevitz provided a spark with a layup and two free throws, but Briar Cliff capitalized on the Raiders' nine turnovers to extend their lead. Contributions from Mallory Leerar's three-pointer and Brooklyn Heineman's steady scoring helped Briar Cliff finish the quarter ahead 40–20.

The third quarter saw Northwestern come out swinging, with Margo Schuiteman sinking a three-pointer at 9:24, assisted by Piercy. TerWee added crucial points with a layup at 8:15 and another fast-break layup at 7:59. Despite their determination, the Raiders struggled to close the gap as Briar Cliff maintained their lead.

Northwestern kept fighting, with Wobig's three-pointer at 4:35 and Karolevitz's layup at 2:31 contributing to the team's effort. Foss added a layup at 1:13, demonstrating the Raiders' relentless attack on the paint. Despite matching Briar Cliff's 26 points in the quarter, Northwestern trailed 66-46 heading into the final stretch.

The fourth quarter began with Northwestern showing strong defensive energy, highlighted by Foss's steal at 8:41 that led to a Schuiteman layup, cutting into the Chargers' lead. Foss tallied a career-high nine assists, highlighting her playmaking prowess. Contributions from Aubrey Metzger and Karolevitz helped trim the deficit to 66-50.

As the quarter continued, Northwestern's three-point shooting became crucial. Schuiteman and Piercy each nailed three-pointers, with Foss's assists playing a key role in tightening BCU's lead. Despite a late surge, including Piercy's timely three-pointer with 51 seconds on the clock, the Raiders couldn't close the gap.

The game wrapped up with Northwestern scoring 24 points in the fourth quarter, but the Chargers held on for a 79-70 victory.
