Northwestern Falls Short in Competitive Battle

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – Northwestern women's basketball fell to (RV) Hastings 82-69 at the Bultman Center on Saturday.

The Raiders kicked off the first quarter with a strong presence in the paint, racking up 12 points inside. Fastbreak opportunities added another six points to their tally. Allison Piercy and Margo Schuiteman kept the offense balanced, with Schuiteman delivering crucial assists and points in the paint to keep the game competitive.

However, the Broncos edged ahead with their sharp perimeter shooting, nailing five three-pointers to carve out a slight lead. Northwestern fought back late in the quarter, with Emily TerWee scoring inside and Piercy sinking a jumper to narrow the gap. The first quarter wrapped up with Hastings leading 22–19.

Starting the second quarter with a deficit, Northwestern quickly worked to close the gap. TerWee scored two layups in the paint, making the most of offensive rebounds. The team's defense shone with five blocks, highlighted by Piercy and Ellie Karolevitz, which kept Hastings from pulling away.

Though trailing, the Raiders kept the pressure on with key threes from Kylie Foss and Piercy, maintaining momentum and keeping the contest tight at 36-34 entering the break.
The third quarter saw Northwestern face a challenge as Hastings extended their lead. An early three-pointer from Ashtyn Wobig at 8:01, assisted by Foss, briefly closed the gap. Yet, Hastings countered with effective fast breaks, stretching their lead to 16 points late in the quarter.

Despite the Raiders' efforts, including another three-pointer from Wobig at 4:30 and a layup from Schuiteman with under a minute remaining, Hastings held firm. The quarter concluded with the Broncos leading 64-50, leaving Northwestern looking to rally in the final stretch.

In the final frame, Northwestern made an offensive push. Schuiteman hit a jumper off a Foss assist at 9:52, and TerWee followed up in the paint, narrowing the gap to 10 points. Hastings responded with a series of defensive plays, including four steals. Nonetheless, Northwestern kept the game competitive while taking advantage on the glass.

Maddie Pottebaum's triple at 6:19 brought the score to 69-61 before Hastings answered to stretch their lead back to double digits. Northwestern battled to the finish line, but the Broncos closed the contest with an 82-69 road win.
