Raiders Upset in Road Battle

YANKTON, S.D. – Mount Marty upset No. 7 Northwestern on Saturday for the Lancers' first top-25 win in program history.

The opening kickoff saw Braeden Bosma return the ball for 38 yards, setting Northwestern up in good field position at their own 43-yard line. Despite the promising start, the Red Raiders' initial drive stalled after only one yard gained. On the ensuing Mount Marty drive, defensive resilience was evident when Trystin Voss delivered a crucial sack for an eight-yard loss, halting Mount Marty's progress. On the Raiders' next possession, Beau Bush connected with Tanner Schouten and Sam Remmerde on multiple occasions, advancing the ball effectively, though the first quarter concluded with a scoreless deadlock.

The second began with Northwestern unable to convert third down, setting the Lancers on an 83-yard scoring drive to put the first points of the day on the board. Mount Marty added to its lead with less than a minute remaining in the half, converting on a 29-yard field goal to extend the lead to 10-0. After Northwestern's drive was ended with an interception, Mount Marty took the ball to the 33 before LukeJeltema intercepted a pass at the Lancers' 8-yard line, ensuring the score remained close at the half.

The Red Raiders' defense quickly asserted itself in the second half with Jaxson Hildebrand and Voss tackling the Lancers' Kyle Hirsch for a three-yard loss, forcing a punt. Colby Duncan then orchestrated a methodical drive, ending with a 10-yard touchdown pass to Carson Ness at 6:54, followed by Gianna Bennett's successful extra point to make it 10-7.

The final quarter opened with Mount Marty driving into the red zone before Jhymir Pearson rushed for a 2-yard touchdown at 14:12. Northwestern responded swiftly, with Duncan orchestrating a 75-yard drive, culminating in Gardner Casey's 1-yard touchdown run at 9:55. Despite a promising drive led by Duncan that advanced the ball to the MMU13, Northwestern's comeback hopes were thwarted in the closing minutes by an interception under the two-minute mark, sealing a hard-fought contest with the Lancers emerging victorious 24-14.
