Volleyball Battles to Split on Saturday

OMAHA, Neb. – Northwestern ended its weekend 2-2 at the CSM Labor Day Classic, facing a tough schedule inside the Lied Fitness Center.

MATCH 1: NWC 3, PSC 0 (25-15, 26-24, 25-16)
How It Happened
The Raiders took an early lead in the first with an opening kill by Aubrey De Groot from Liv Reitsma, but the Bobcats quickly tied the score with a kill by Alejandra Villareal. The teams traded points until the Raiders gained momentum with a service ace by Reitsma followed by consecutive kills from Maddy Sampson, pushing the score to 12-7. The Bobcats responded with a brief rally, capitalizing on a service ace by Villareal to tie the score at 14-14. However, the Raiders then executed a decisive 8-0 run, including key plays by Stella Winterfeld and a service ace by Tierney Huss, prompting a timeout by the Bobcats. The Raiders maintained control, closing the set with a block by Zavyr Metzger to secure a 25-15 victory.

In the second set, the teams exchanged early points before the Raiders jumped out to a 4-2 lead on Peru State errors. The Bobcats then went on a streak, with Villareal and Eden Moore contributing to a 13-8 advantage, prompting a Raiders timeout. The Raiders responded with a strong block defense, notably from Metzger, and tied the game at 15-15. Despite trailing 24-23, the Raiders secured the set with a decisive 3-0 run, closing out with two blocks, ending the set 26-24.

The Raiders started the third set with a strong 6-0 run, prompting a Peru State timeout. Despite a service error that gave the Bobcats their first point, the Raiders maintained control with key contributions from Winterfeld and Rylie Franken, who combined for blocks. The Bobcats attempted to rally with a few successful kills, but the Raiders' defense, highlighted by blocks from Metzger and Emma Westphal, kept them at bay. With a service ace from Winterfeld and a final kill by Westphal, the Raiders secured the set and match victory, ending with a 25-16 score.

How It Happened
Indiana Wesleyan started the match strong with a service ace from Abbigail Porter, taking an early lead. Northwestern countered with a kill by Zavyr Metzger, but the Wildcats extended their advantage to 10-6, aided by multiple kills from Avery Caskey. The Raiders called a timeout at 17-12 following a service ace by Dayessi Luis. After the break, the Wildcats maintained their lead, but the Raiders rallied to tie the score at 22-22, thanks to blocks by Metzger and Emma Westphal. Indiana Wesleyan responded with a decisive run, including a kill by Caskey and a service ace by Camaya Murry, to close out the set 26-24.

In the second set, both teams exchanged leads early, with neither side gaining a significant advantage. Northwestern's Liv Reitsma facilitated key plays, assisting on multiple kills by Aubrey De Groot, bringing the Raiders to a 7-6 edge. IWU's Ella Mauck countered with a series of kills to keep the Wildcats competitive. A timeout by the Wildcats at 13-12 couldn't halt the Raiders' momentum as Westphal and Stella Winterfeld contributed crucial points. Despite Indiana Wesleyan closing the gap to 21-20 with a rally, Northwestern maintained composure and sealed the set with a 25-21 victory, highlighted by a service ace from Reitsma and a final kill by De Groot.

The Raiders started the third strong with an early 3-1 lead, highlighted by consecutive kills from Metzger. The Wildcats quickly countered, tying the score at 5-5 and then taking a narrow 7-6 lead. Indiana Wesleyan extended their lead to 15-11, prompting Northwestern to call a timeout to disrupt the momentum. Despite the Raiders' efforts, IWU maintained its advantage with consistent performance from Marissa Mullins and Marin Sanchez, eventually sealing the set 25-19.

In the fourth set, Indiana Wesleyan started strong with a 2-0 lead, with Mauck and Sanchez contributing early kills. The Raiders responded with points from Winterfeld and Sidney Oostra, but the Wildcats were able to extend their lead to 10-5, prompting another timeout from Northwestern. Despite a sequence of kills by Maddy Sampson and Winterfeld, the Wildcats maintained control, leading 15-6, assisted by strong play from Porter, who provided multiple assists and a service ace. Northwestern made a late push with a run that included kills from Winterfeld and Metzger, narrowing the deficit to 24-23. However, a final kill by Caskey secured the set for Indiana Wesleyan at 25-23.
