SIOUX CENTER, Iowa – The No. 6 ranked Raiders opened GPAC play with a hard-fought victory against Dordt in front of a full house at the De Witt Gymnasium.

How It Happened
Northwestern opened GPAC play at the De Witt Gymnasium on Saturday against the Dordt Defenders in the first of two matchups between the Sioux County rivals.

In a highly competitive match, Dordt capitalized on their home court advantage early, jumping out to a 16-11 lead and forcing a Northwestern timeout. The Raiders answered by scoring three straight out of the break, forcing a Defender timeout. Northwestern got within one point of winning the opening set before Dordt pulled ahead to take the first set 26-24.

Northwestern came out hot to begin the second set. Four kills by Sidney Oostra led the Raiders to an 11-5 lead before a Defender timeout. The Raiders did not slow down, however, as Stella Winterfeld went on to record five kills on the set, the last of those being assisted by Liv Reitsma to even up the match.

With the momentum behind them, the Red Raiders spread the ball around, getting points off of kills from Winterfeld, Oostra, and Zavyr Metzger to gain a 16-11 lead. Northwestern proceeded to go on a six point run before Reitsma assisted Aubrey De Groot on the set-clinching kill.

The Defenders opened up frame four with a 2-0 lead in a back-and-forth set. There were four lead changes prompting timeouts by both teams. Dordt created two key runs of four and five points each, allowing them to secure the set win with a score of 25-18 and send the match to a winner-take-all fifth set.

Both crowds were loud and on their feet for the final set of the match. The sides traded points, but the defensive prowess of Metzger and the offensive firepower of Winterfeld would prove too much for the Defenders to handle. Metzger was part of three huge blocks early in the frame while Winterfeld iced the match with three-straight kills to secure the 15-12 win for the Raiders.

Game Notes:
Up Next: Northwestern will take on Dakota Wesleyan at the Bultman Center on Wednesday, September 10 for their home opener.
