Preparing a House of Champions

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – Jim Burmakow is a name that echoes through the halls of Northwestern College, synonymous with dedication and commitment. For 41 years, he's been more than just a member of the maintenance staff; he's been a linchpin in the institution's operations. His career began in 1984, and since then, he's been instrumental in maintaining and nurturing the heart of Northwestern Athletics, the Bultman Center.

Burmakow's journey at Northwestern started in the old auditorium, where he was tasked with giving it the care and attention it so desperately needed.

"For how old it was, it was in kind of sad shape. I know the coaches were appreciative of the work we did, and I started cleaning in there because they didn't have anybody that did it on a regular daily basis."

From there, he transitioned to the Bultman Center, where he's spent the majority of his career.

He recalls being involved in the early days of the Bultman Center, preparing it for its first occupants.

"I sat in on some meetings, but once they got ready to move in here, I came over and cleaned the offices so they could start moving in. I then refinished and waxed the floors before they moved in," Burmakow said.

In those early years, Burmakow witnessed the evolution of the campus and the venue itself. He saw it transform from a brand-new building to a place filled with memories, championships, and countless students passing through its halls.

THE HEART OF THE BULTMAN
For Burmakow, the Bultman Center isn't just a building; it's a living entity. It's a place where students, coaches, and staff come together to create a community; a place where championships are won, lessons are learned, and lifelong connections are formed.

One of the aspects that stands out to Burmakow is the relationships he's built with the students who have walked through those doors. He's had the privilege of watching them grow and succeed, both on and off the field.

"A lot of them come in as freshmen, and with it being their first time away from home, you become a parent. I've adopted some of them in a sense. A lot of them you work with, some go through homesickness they come to you with and talk to you about. They just need someone to talk to about it, and oftentimes I was that person," Burmakow said.

Burmakow's role as a mentor and a surrogate family member to many students has been a source of fulfillment throughout his career. He's seen them come and go, but their impact on his life has been immeasurable.

He's also had the privilege of working with a dedicated group of coaches and staff members. Over the years, he's seen them rise from students to assistant coaches, and eventually to head coaches.

"That's the part that's kind of hard to walk away from," Burmakow admitted. "It's a neat group of people."

A LEGACY OF DEDICATION
As he reflects on his 41-year career, Burmakow acknowledges the profound impact Northwestern has had on his life. When he first arrived in Orange City, he knew no one. But through his work at the college, he built a vast network of friends and colleagues who have become like family.

"Going from knowing nobody to now where I probably know more people here than where I grew up, it's been an impactful place," Burmakow added.

As he approaches retirement, Burmakow is looking forward to spending more time with his family and exploring new opportunities. He's not entirely sure what the future holds, but he knows that the relationships and experiences he's gained at Northwestern will always be a part of him.

He does know, however, that his future does involve supporting Red Raider teams from his usual seat.

"We'll become some of those spectators that are just diehard fans that always are there to support the team."

Burmakow's story is a testament to the power of purpose and the impact one person can have on a community. His dedication to the Bultman Center and the students, coaches, and staff who call it home has left an indelible mark on Northwestern College.
