CRETE, Neb. — Northwestern (4-0, 1-0) defeated Doane (NE) (2-2, 0-1), 82-67, with a strong 31-point fourth quarter and 46 points in the paint.
Northwestern began the first quarter with early momentum, establishing their presence with strong play in the paint.
Allison Piercy scored the opening layup with an assist from
Ashtyn Wobig, setting the tone early. The Red Raiders' defensive efforts were notable, as they recorded three steals and a block, effectively limiting the Tigers' opportunities.
Northwestern got to a 10-point lead at the 2:36 mark, capped by a three-pointer from Piercy, assisted by Wobig. Despite Doane closing the gap in the final minutes with a late three-pointer, the Raiders maintained their edge. The quarter ended with Northwestern leading 18-16, thanks to their efficient shooting.
Northwestern opened the second quarter maintaining their momentum, extending their lead to 15 points at 8:32. Key defensive plays, including three steals, helped sustain their advantage.
Margo Schuiteman and Piercy contributed significantly, with Schuiteman assisting a 3-pointer by Piercy that initially pushed the lead.
Despite Doane managing to tie the game on three occasions, the Red Raiders responded effectively. A fast break layup by Piercy and a subsequent drive by
Kylie Foss kept the visitors ahead. The quarter concluded with Northwestern holding a slight edge, tied 16–16 in the period, but leading 34–32 overall.
Northwestern began the third quarter with a strong presence in the paint, amassing 14 points from inside and capitalizing on second chances to regain momentum.
Jenna Kluxdal contributed significantly with two blocks, and added multiple points from the free throw line to extend the lead to four at one point.
The Tigers responded with a series of 3-pointers, briefly taking the lead halfway through the quarter. However, Northwestern's persistence on the boards and timely layups by
Ellie Karolevitz and
Aubrey Metzger allowed them to reclaim a narrow lead. As the quarter closed, Wobig sealed a two-point cushion by converting a free throw with one second remaining, ending the quarter tied at 17-17, with the Raiders maintaining a slim overall lead, 51-49.
Northwestern maintained their momentum into the fourth quarter with a strategic burst in the paint, scoring effectively with 16 points in that area. Schuiteman opened the quarter with a layup, assisted by Kluxdal, setting the tone for the visitors. Piercy then extended the lead with a 3-pointer, supported by Schuiteman's assist, creating a significant gap in the score.
Kluxdal contributed to maintaining the lead with two free throws, while Foss capitalized on a defensive rebound with a successful layup. The Raiders' efficiency from the field was evident, as they converted 11 of 15 attempts, including two 3-pointers, and demonstrated strong teamwork with eight assists in the quarter. The visitors effectively closed the game with Wobig's layup, reaching a lead of 15 points with 48 seconds remaining. Northwestern finished the game with a decisive 31-18 scoring advantage in the final quarter, resulting in an 82-67 victory.
