How It Happened
Northwestern opened GPAC play in the Bultman Center on Wednesday, meeting the Briar Cliff Chargers for the first of two times this season.

In a match that was competitive despite the final score, Northwestern opened set one with an 8-2 lead to force a Charger timeout early. Out of the timeout, Briar Cliff took three of four points before Savonne Sterk took over to pick up three kills and give the Raiders a 12-6 advantage. Another 4-0 run later in the set pushed the Raider lead to 10 points, but the Chargers did not give up, going on a 6-1 run to come within five points. Northwestern closed strong, ending the set 25-17 on an Alysen Dexter kill off of Logan Miller's assist.

Briar Cliff came out firing to begin the second frame, first leading 5-0 and later forcing a Northwestern timeout at 11-4. The Raiders responded well from the huddle, taking 20 of the next 22 points to win the set and move ahead 2-0.

With a win in their sights, the Red Raiders entered the third frame with a balanced approach, getting points from Maddy Sampson, Jazlin Douma, and Logan Miller to build up a 6-3 lead. The Raiders continued their march forward, taking their largest lead of the set, 17-8, on a four-point service run from Sidney Oostra. Zavyr Metzger was the catalyst in closing the match, collecting a kill and a block late before Marissa Pottebaum drove home the game-clinching kill.

Game Notes:
  • Jazlin Douma led all players with 10 kills.
  • Alysen Dexter had nine kills on an efficient .450 hitting percentage.
  • Zavyr Metzger led the way with five blocks, also adding six kills.
  • Northwestern hit .301 on the night while limiting Briar Cliff to a .040 clip.
  • Logan Miller was the leading assist-getter with 17.
  • Jori Hajek totaled 11 digs.
Up Next: Northwestern will have a week off before meeting No. 15 Morningside in Sioux City on Wednesday, September 11.
