Northwestern Takes Down Morningside in Top-15 Matchup

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – Top-ranked Northwestern took down No. 15 Morningside in three sets on Wednesday night in a top-15 matchup inside Allee Gymnasium.

"I thought it was a good team win for us," commented head coach Kyle Van Den Bosch. "We served the ball aggressively and our offense really got going early. This was one of our best defensive games from our block to our back court running down a lot of volleyballs."

How It Happened
The Raiders got out to a hot start in set one, opening up an 8-3 lead on a Savonne Sterk kill. Their lead grew to double digits for the first time of the night when Alysen Dexter put down a kill to make it 14-4. Northwestern controlled play in the latter part of the set, reaching 20 points on a Morningside error with the score 20-7. The Mustangs brought some energy to close the set, but it was not enough as Northwestern took a 1-0 advantage with a 25-13 win.

Set two was neck-and-neck to begin, with the sides trading points before a 7-1 run sparked by Emma Westphal put Northwestern ahead 18-12. Over the run, Jazlin Douma collected four kills to lead the team. Later on, the Mustangs inched closer at 21-17 before the Raiders took five of the final seven to put themselves on the brink of a top-15 sweep.

Morningside came out firing in the third, grabbing a 4-1 advantage to start. Out of a timeout with the score 8-5 Mustangs, Northwestern stormed back, taking its first lead of the set at 9-8 on back-to-back Dexter kills. The run grew to 18-4, growing the Raider lead to 22-12 on Dexter's service ace. Northwestern closed out the match with the final three points, scored by Douma and Emma Westphal.
