Red Raiders Get Statement Win at No. 4 Concordia

SEWARD, Neb. – A top-five road matchup and rematch of the 2023 GPAC Championship saw No. 1 Northwestern fight its way to a five-set win over No. 4 Concordia (Neb.) on the road.

NWC 3, CUNE 2 (25-17, 16-25, 16-25, 25-15, 15-12)
How It Happened
Northwestern rallied back for the win by taking the final two sets and winning in five.

"Our team stayed composed and disciplined in the fifth set and made key plays at the right time," said head coach Kyle Van Den Bosch. "Concordia is an elite team, so this was a big conference win for us."

The Raiders controlled the opening frame, forcing errors in the first three points to grab the early lead. Later on, Northwestern was sparked by a block from Zavyr Metzger and Jazlin Douma on an 8-2 run to force a Bulldog timeout at 20-12. Douma then finished out the set with Liv Reitsma's assist to give the visiting squad a 1-0 advantage.

"We started out the match playing really well," Van Den Bosch noted. "We were in system offensively and getting touches defensively on about everything."

Concordia took its home-court advantage into its hands in the second and third, converting on an explosive .517 of their attack attempts in the third to put the Raiders' backs to the wall.

Northwestern, however, did not stop fighting. A lead as large as nine points in the middle of the fourth set the stage for a fifth set after taking the fourth 25-15.

"We picked up our serving and passing, which allowed us to get back in system and be the aggressors again."

With the hype building into the fifth set, Northwestern came out strong, earning the first three points thanks to a Douma kill and Sidney Oostra ace. The Bulldogs worked back up to a 7-6 lead, but a 3-0 answer from the Raiders prompted a Concordia timeout. Then, tied 10-10, Douma collected two in a row to regain the advantage. A Bulldog error and Dexter kill closed it out, as Northwestern won the fifth 15-12.

Game Notes:
  • Jazlin Douma was an efficient .340, totaling 24 kills, 11 digs, and five blocks.
  • Alysen Dexter added 10 kills.
  • Liv Reitsma dished out 23 assists, becoming the 11th Red Raider to reach 2,000 career assists.
  • Reitsma also had two service aces and eight digs.
  • Zavyr Metzger had six blocks on the day.
  • Jori Hajek led the team in digs (12).
