Northwestern Defeats Viterbo in Top-15 Matchup

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – In a meeting between two top-15 teams and 2023 national semifinalists, Northwestern took down Viterbo (Wis.) in straight sets on Wednesday in the Bultman Center.

NWC 3, VU 0 (25-12, 25-21, 25-16)
How It Happened
The Raiders held all the momentum from the jump, getting the home crowd fired up by winning the first two points. After a Viterbo timeout at 9-4, Northwestern went on a 10-2 run, largely on the service of Sidney Oostra. Their largest lead of the night came in the first set, going on a 5-1 run to take a 13-point lead at the end of the frame.

Another hot start put Northwestern up 9-3 to open the second, as Viterbo was stuffed on the block from Zavyr Metzger and Alysen Dexter. The V-Hawks started to show signs of life, building their way back to a 12-12 tie, even taking a 16-15 lead later in the set. Dexter's service helped Northwestern to a 5-0 rally to be the first team to 20, fighting off Viterbo's comeback for a 25-21 win.

Viterbo played some of its best volleyball of the night early in the third, but Northwestern methodically found its way back, using a 6-0 run to gain an 18-11 advantage. The Raiders then had a successful service run from Jazlin Douma to put themselves in the driver's seat, setting up a 25-16 win and a sweep.

Game Notes:
  • Zavyr Metzger recorded eight blocks, upping her career total to 350.
  • The Raider defense was out in full force, blocking 14 attempts and holding Viterbo to a -.038 attacking clip.
  • Jazlin Douma was the game's leader in kills (14).
  • Jori Hajek dug up 17 hits.
  • Logan Miller (16) and Liv Reitsma (14) both finished with double-digit assists.
  • Northwestern takes a 6-5 lead in the all-time series against the V-Hawks.
  • The Raiders have won via the sweep in 12 of their 17 matches.
Up Next: The Raiders move back into conference play, hosting Doane on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
