Raiders Battle Way to 2-0 Start in Montana

Metzger collects career-high eight kills in first match

BUTTE, Mont. – After falling behind in the first match of the year, the No. 2 Northwestern volleyball team rattled off six-straight set wins to tally two wins on Friday.

"It was a good start to the season," head coach Kyle Van Den Bosch commented. "Bushnell played a really good match, and I thought our team played with a lot of heart and determination to come back and win that match. I thought we played cleaner in the second match against Loyola to get the win."

MATCH 1: NWC 3, BU 2 (23-25, 24-26, 27-25, 25-10, 15-11)
How It Happened
The Bushnell Beacons held the lead for the entirety of the first set, holding off a Raider comeback attempt for the 25-23 win.

In the second, one of two sets to eclipse the 25-point maximum, Northwestern moved ahead early before Bushnell took the lead at 16-15. Later, with the score knotted at 24-24, the Beacons grabbed the final two points to put a win in their sights.

On the ropes down 25-24 in set three, Northwestern scored the final three points on a service and attacking error before Maddy Sampson clinched it with the kill.

After staying alive, the Raiders forced a tiebreaking set five by winning the fourth in dominant fashion. Northwestern scored the first eight points, setting the tone for a 25-10 win.

In the winner-take-all, a 5-0 Northwestern run forced a Bushnell timeout with the score at 5-2. The Beacons came out of the timeout scoring six of the next eight, but the Raiders responded by taking eight of the final 11 to stave off the early season upset bid.

Game Notes:
  • Zavyr Metzger notched a career-best eight kills to go along with her nine blocks.
  • Jazlin Douma led the way in kills with 19, also collecting a double-double with 14 digs.
  • Setters Liv Reitsma (25) and Logan Miller (20) dished out 20+ assists each.
  • Emma Westphal picked up six blocks, while Maddy Sampson had five in her collegiate debut.
  • Northwestern won its opening match of the season for the eighth consecutive year.
MATCH 2: NWC 3, LOYOLA 0 (25-19, 25-12, 25-21)
How It Happened
Northwestern carried its momentum into the second match of the day, pulling off a sweep of the Loyola Wolfpack on Friday night.

The Raiders hit .303 on their way to a convincing victory, never trailing in the match.

Loyola attempted to keep its hopes alive in the third, coming within one at 18-17, but it was Northwestern who took six of the final nine points to move to 2-0 in the Big Sky Challenge.

Game Notes:
  • Liv Reitsma was the team leader in assists (19) and digs (16), also scoring on two service aces.
  • Zavyr Metzger (6.0 blk) and Emma Westphal (5.0 blk) were once again stifling in the middle.
