Northwestern Finishes Weekend Out West Unbeaten

BUTTE, Mont. – The No. 2-ranked Northwestern volleyball team showed its muscle on Saturday, knocking down two opponents receiving votes in Embry-Riddle (Ariz.) and Rocky Mountain (Mont.) to finish their Big Sky Challenge slate.

"We picked up two hard-fought wins today," commented head coach Kyle Van Den Bosch. "I thought we were very gritty and tough against Embry-Riddle at crucial time, playing our best side of the season in the first set. We knew that Rocky was a really good defensive team, and I thought our team defended them throughout the whole night. It was a good way to start the season."

MATCH 1: NWC 3, ERAU 1 (25-11, 26-24, 25-23, 25-13)
How It Happened
The Raiders came out strong in the first set, winning in commanding fashion. Through the middle portion of the first, Northwestern had both a 6-0 run and an 8-1 rally.

Embry-Riddle responded in the second, moving ahead 14-7 to take the advantage. After Northwestern tied it at 24-24, the Eagles scored the next two to tie the match.

The third was also a nail-biter, with the lead changing hands often. A 4-0 run put ERAU ahead 19-17, but Northwestern ended the contest by taking six of the final seven points, headlined by two service aces from Cadence Goebel and a pair of kills for Alysen Dexter.

Northwestern's match-clinching set had a similar path as the first set, with the Raiders taking 11 of 13 points to close the contest.

Game Notes:
MATCH 2: NWC 3, RMC 0 (25-19, 25-19, 25-20)
How It Happened
Northwestern won via the sweep for the second time this season, defeating (RV) Rocky Mountain (Mont.) in three sets.

Despite the lead changing hands through the middle of the first set, Northwestern finished strong with a 7-0 run to set the tone in the match.

The Raiders opened set two with a 7-3 lead, set by three kills from Jazlin Douma. Rocky grabbed a 15-12 lead later on before Northwestern capitalized on five consecutive points, led by Maddy Sampson's two kills. Sticking to the theme of the first weekend of the season, Northwestern finished strong, taking five of six to put its opponent on the ropes.

The final set again saw the Battlin' Bears move ahead 15-12, but adjustments out of the timeout put Northwestern back in it, going ahead 16-15. Zavyr Metzger closed the match with three kills in a 7-2 run, pushing the Raiders to a 4-0 record.

Game Notes:
Up Next: The Raiders are back in action next Friday, taking on Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) as part of the Bellevue Tournament.
