Northwestern Drops Semifinal Contest to Morningside

Sterk with 22 points, LaFave with 18; Four Raiders in Double Figures

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – In a rubber match between teams that split their regular season series, the Northwestern men's basketball team fell to the Morningside Mustangs on Saturday in the Bultman Center.

Morningside started the way they wanted to, building up an 8-0 lead in the first 90 seconds. The Raiders battled back over the next three minutes, as Kaleb Booth got out to an efficient start to hit a three that gave his team a 14-11 lead with 15:15 on the clock. A few minutes later, Craig Sterk stretched the lead to six on a two-handed slam before Booth knocked down another triple to make it 21-14. Northwestern led by as many as 10 points when Conner Geddes continued his shooting streak with a three, making it 39-29 with seven minutes until halftime.

Responding to Northwestern's game plan in the final stages of the half, the Mustangs decided to turn up the tempo to put together a 10-0 run over two minutes and knot the game at 41-41 with 3:40 in the first half. Northwestern, however, answered by scoring six in the final moments of the first to lead 47-46 going into the locker room.

Despite the Raiders scoring the first bucket of the second half, Morningside led for 18 minutes in the second frame, shutting off Northwestern's attempts to rally. The visitors held a narrow margin before extending their lead to double-digits, holding a 91-78 advantage with a minute remaining to hold Northwestern away from playing in its first GPAC championship game since 2021.

GAME NOTES
  • Craig Sterk had a game-high 22 points.
  • Zach LaFave notched his fourth double-double of the season with 18 points and 13 rebounds.
