Van Kalsbeek, Sterk Lead Raiders to Home Tournament Win

Northwestern wins first national tournament game in one-division era

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – A physical battle in front of a packed Bultman Center saw No. 5-seeded Northwestern take down the No. 12-seeded Saint Mary-of-the-Woods Pomeroys, 102-87 in the NAIA First Round, presented by Ballogy.

"I thought in the second half, our guys locked in and made things tougher for them," head coach Kris Korver said postgame. "Our big-time players were big time. When you're in the national tournament, you need everyone to play their role with great passion and execution, and our guys did that tonight."

The Pomeroys came ready to play, beginning the game on a 6-0 run to silence an excited Bultman crowd. Northwestern, however, did not let up, taking its first lead on a bucket by Keyton Moser to move ahead 18-16 with 11:52 on the clock. With both teams making tough shots toward halftime, Alex Van Kalsbeek showed his toughness, finishing the poster slam to tie it at 41-41 with two minutes until the break. Saint Mary-of-the-Woods continued to show their worth in their first national tournament appearance, building up a four-point lead going into the second half.

As they have done often this season, Northwestern made the necessary adjustments out of the locker room to have a successful second half. After a Van Kalsbeek three, Dillon Carlson found a cutting Kaleb Booth for a layup to take a 54-52 lead. The Raiders took their largest lead of the game at 80-70 past the midway point when Booth sliced through the lane for the teardrop lay-in, getting the crowd on its feet. With momentum swinging in Northwestern's favor, Carlson pulled up from deep to put the Raiders ahead by double-digits at the three-minute mark, helping Northwestern advance to the Second Round.
