Schany Powers Northwestern to Round of 32

Raiders win their first NAIA tournament game since 2021

MARION, Ind. – The No. 9-seeded Red Raider women's basketball team won its first national tournament game under the direction of head coach Kristin Rotert, defeating No. 8-seed Rio Grande (Ohio) in the First Round. Molly Schany scored a career-high 34 points in the win.

"I thought we got out to a really good start, which was important against a team that plays with pace," head coach Kristin Rotert commented. "There were stretches of the first half that we played in their hands, but we regrouped well after halftime and had a much better second half."

The Red Storm got out to a fast start, playing at their pace to take a 26-22 lead after the first quarter. Northwestern opened up a 9-2 lead over the first three minutes, capped by a Schany three, but Rio Grande took its first lead of the contest at 21-20 with two minutes to go in the period.

Northwestern regained the lead late in the second quarter, with Lexie Van Kekerix knocking down a three to go ahead 39-38 with 3:21 remaining. After Maren Nerem went 2-for-2 from the stripe to go up 43-42 late in the half, the Red Storm hit a jumper to go into the locker room with the lead.

The Raiders led for a majority of the third, with Schany scoring on a fastbreak layup to go ahead 47-46, moving ahead by as many as eight points on multiple occasions and taking a 60-57 lead into the fourth.

With 10 minutes between the Raiders and a national tournament win, Northwestern used its size to its advantage to get to the line and ice the game. Northwestern made nine of its 13 attempts, with eight from the line for Schany in the final five minutes to advance to the Second Round.
