Etherington Becomes All-Time Strikeout Leader; Raiders Sweep No. 11 Baker

Krachey with two hits on the day, two RBIs

SIOUX CENTER, Iowa – In a top-15 matchup, the No. 15 Red Raider softball team (5-0, 0-0 GPAC) took down No. 11 Baker (Kan.) (0-2, 0-0 Heart), winning game one 3-1 in extras, and earning a comeback win, 4-3 in game two. Kameryn Etherington struck out the final batter of game two to earn the save and become the program's all-time career strikeout leader.

"Today was a great day to play a tough team," Etherington said. "We competed hard and played together. What more can you ask for? Go Raiders!"

How It Happened
A pitcher's duel saw Northwestern put two runs on the board in extra innings to defeat the No. 11 Baker Wildcats.

The Raiders had a chance early, putting their first two runners in scoring position in the first inning before Kira Baker shut down three in a row to get out of the inning unscathed.

Baker was first to score in the fifth, adding a run on back-to-back doubles to break onto the scoreboard.

Northwestern answered in the next half inning as Ravyn Krachey hit a one-out double ahead of an RBI single for Tatum Schmalbeck to tie the game.

Needing extras to decide a winner, Gwen Mikkelsen drew a two-out walk to put runners at first and second. In the next at-bat, Maddie Kvatek doubled to center, allowing Abby Pate to score and break the tie. Logan Miller then reached on a fielder's choice to bring the second run of the inning across.

Etherington shut down the side in the bottom of the inning to earn her second win of the year.

How It Happened
Northwestern battled back from a 3-0 deficit to secure the doubleheader sweep of Baker, defeating the Wildcats 4-3 on Friday afternoon.

It was once again a strong pitching matchup until the fourth inning, when the Wildcats broke onto the scoreboard for a 1-0 lead.

Baker then added to their advantage in the fifth, scoring two runs on a pair of RBI singles.

Trailing 3-0, Northwestern needed to string hits together to start a comeback bid. They did just that, playing small ball before a Ravyn Krachey single to right scored two runs. Then, with two outs, Tatum Schmalbeck continued her effective day with an RBI double, forcing a pitching change. After Annika Jahn advanced to third on a wild pitch, Maddie Kvatek brought her home to give Northwestern its first lead of the day at 4-3.

Later, in the seventh, Kameryn Etherington entered for the save, stranding a runner on third with her 481st career strikeout, breaking the program record.

Game Notes:
Up Next: Northwestern will take on (RV) Mount Mercy in a doubleheader tomorrow starting at 10:00 a.m.
