Gallegos Walk-Off Highlights Day of Wins

Etherington wins two pitching decisions

SIOUX CENTER, Iowa – No. 15 Northwestern continued its winning ways as they won both games of Saturday's doubleheader against (RV) Mount Mercy (Iowa).

"It's been great to have this opportunity to play nationally-ranked non-conference teams this early in the season," head coach Shane Bouman commented. "I'm proud of the hard work this group has put in."

GAME 1: NWC 9, MMU 2
Pitching Decisions
Win: Kameryn Etherington (3-0)
Loss: K. Minger (1-1)
Save: None

How It Happened
Kameryn Etherington hit a two-run home run and pitched a complete game as Northwestern downed Mount Mercy in game one of Saturday's doubleheader.

The Raiders scored first, putting two runs on the board in the second inning. First, Charli Bomgaars scored Alyssa Vortherms on a sacrifice bunt before Gwen Mikkelsen recorded her sixth RBI of the year to send Randi Childress across.

Heading into the fourth with a 2-0 lead, Northwestern created more separation with a five-run frame. Bomgaars once again created havoc with the bunt, allowing Childress to score on an error and make it 3-0. The Raiders took advantage of another error to score in the next at-bat, while Etherington brought Bomgaars home on a sacrifice fly later in the inning to make the score 5-0. Chloe Gallegos then continued the run with a two-out base hit to right, allowing Maddie Kvatek and Berkley Johannsen to score and build a commanding 7-0 lead.

Following a two-run inning by the Mustangs to cut their deficit to five, the Raiders added on with Etherington's two-run blast to left, her first of the season and 16th career.

How It Happened

Mount Mercy used the long ball to move ahead in the fifth and sixth innings as Allie Poston homered in the fifth and Keily Ulatowski in the sixth.

Trailing 2-0 the resilient Raiders cut their deficit in half as Ravyn Krachey hit an RBI single that scored Jewel Bergstrom from second. Two appearances later, Ashtyn Billings hit an RBI single to bring Krachey home from third and tie the game.

Kameryn Etherington came in to keep the score tied in the seventh, throwing two strikeouts in a 1-2-3 inning. In the bottom frame, Maddie Kvatek got aboard to lead off the inning and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Gallegos then completed the walk-off, singling to center to score Kvatek and keep Northwestern unbeaten.
