Raiders Fall in Tight Battle at Concordia

SEWARD, Neb. – 81 points was not enough as the Northwestern Red Raiders (17-5, 10-4 GPAC) fall to the Concordia Bulldogs (17-5, 10-4 GPAC) on Saturday afternoon.

Concordia would punch first, opening the GPAC clash with a 17-4 run backed by 7-8 shooting from the field, including a trio a three-pointers. The veteran Northwestern squad wouldn't panic, finding their response with a 10-0 scoring run with buckets from 4 different Raiders, cutting the Concordia lead to a mere two points at 23-21. The first half would continue to be defined by scoring runs, though, as Concordia would immediately punch back with an 8-0 run of their own, supported by a pair of threes from their All-American big man Noah Schutte. The remaining 6 minutes would be dominated by the Red Raiders, highlighted by a trio of difficult layups by Keyton Moser. Heading to the break, Northwestern would hold a slim 43-40 lead, with 6 different Raiders scoring at least five points, led by 9 from Moser.
Concordia would once again come out of the break ready to roll, going on a 15-6 run to take a six-point lead over the Raiders. The next 12 minutes would be back and forth with Northwestern clawing its' way to a four-point lead with 4:43 seconds remaining. Key to that run was Alex Van Kalsbeek, scoring 15 points in the first 15 minutes of the second half.

The final minutes of the game would emphasize the difference in play styles displayed over the course of the game: three-point barrage vs. interior domination. Northwestern would outscore the Bulldogs by 16 in the paint for the game, but the Raiders would hit only five three-pointers compared to an impressive 16 for the Bulldogs. Unfortunately for the Raiders, three of those Bulldog threes would come in the final few minutes. The Raiders would have a chance to tie the game at the buzzer, but a fadeaway three from Van Kalsbeek would rim out to give the Concordia Bulldogs the 84-81 win and thrust the GPAC into a 5-way tie at the top of the conference.
