Women’s Basketball Impresses in Front of Home Crowd

Schany records double-double, Van Kekerix adds 20 points

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – The Red Raider women's basketball team scored their highest point total of the year with a 95-64 win inside the Bultman Center on Wednesday night.

"I'm very proud of our effort and energy tonight," stated head coach Kristin Rotert. "We got off to a strong start and did a great job sharing the basketball."

What was a highly-anticipated matchup quickly turned in favor of Northwestern in the Raiders' 31-point win. The Raiders jumped ahead 15-4 through the first five minutes, as Morningside came back within four multiple times, keeping the Mustang deficit at 24-20 after the opening quarter.

A pair of free throws early in the second brought Morningside within two, but a 3-for-4 from the line over two possessions from Maren Nerem sparked a 14-2 run to bring Northwestern's lead to 40-26 with 2:30 until halftime. Hali Anderson and Kylie Foss closed the quarter with buckets to make it 47-31 at the break.

As they have done often in recent outings, the Raiders were the aggressors to start the third. The first 20-point lead of the game came at 7:57, as Lexie Van Kekerix drained one from beyond the arc to go ahead 52-31. Molly Schany then brought it to a 24-point lead with five minutes to go, as the Raiders took a 62-42 advantage into the final frame.

The Raiders closed the game out strong, taking their largest lead of the night on a Payton Beckman trey on the final possession to improve to 17-10 (13-8 GPAC).
