Tornow pitches 5 scoreless in game one, three Raiders record multi-hit games in game two

WICHITA, Kansas – The Northwestern baseball team (1-2, 0-0 GPAC) concluded their opening weekend series against Friends University (7-3, 0-0 KCAC) with a two-game split.

How It Happened
Northwestern starting pitcher Brad Tornow threw five shutout innings and tossed four strikeouts as Northwestern took down Friends University in the first matchup of the day.

The Raiders got the scoring started in the top of the second inning after Devin Dirkx drilled an RBI single to left, which plated Sam Stanford. Then, Dirx came around to score after T.J. Silliman lined a triple to right field. The Raiders led 2-0 after two innings.

Northwestern sent their last run of the game across the plate in the sixth inning when Luke Wroblewski doubled to left field to score Drew Dykstra and make it 3-0.

After six scoreless innings from the Raider pitching staff, they finally surrendered their first run in the bottom of the seventh inning after Friends scored on a sacrifice fly. However, the rally would not be enough. Pitcher Jakeb Swallow closed out the inning to secure a 3-1 Raider victory.

How It Happened
A hot start for the Raiders was not enough after they could not overcome a five-run bottom of the fourth inning from the Falcons, dropping the second game of the afternoon 9-2.

The Raiders struck first in the first inning after a Mo Watson groundout scored Luke Wroblewski to put the Raiders ahead 1-0. Later in the first frame, Devin Dirkx drove home Sam Stanford after a single to center field to extend the Raider lead to 2-0.

Friends fought back in the bottom half of the first inning after a solo home run. The Falcons evened the score in the third inning after an RBI single. With the score nodded up at two in the fourth, Friends scored on a single, three-run home run, wild pitch, and a walk to make it 2-7.

The Falcons added a couple of more insurance runs in the fifth to  put the finishing touches on the game and split the two-game set with the Raiders.

Game Notes:
  • Sam Stanford, Devin Dirkx, and Brody Arends each went 2-3.
  • Stanford had a double and scored a run for the Raiders.
  • The Raiders left five runners on base.
  • Aiden Sieperda threw three innings in relief, giving up two runs and striking out seven.
Up Next: The Raiders will be back on the diamond next Friday, playing Viterbo (Wis.) and Graceland (Iowa) in Joplin, Missouri in the Joplin NAIA Preview. Game one will begin at 11 a.m. with the second game to follow at 1:30 p.m.
