Offense Shines in Final Game of 2024

Ave Maria, Fla. - Northwestern College secured a victory over Avila University with a final score of 87-60 on Thursday in Florida at the Tom Golisano Field House.

The first quarter of the game saw a competitive start, with the Eagles taking an early lead at 5-0 thanks to a 3-pointer by Kathleen Stanley at 9:09. The Red Raiders responded with a 6-0 run, highlighted by Ashtyn Wobig's layup and a steal, to take a 6-5 lead. Hali Anderson was instrumental for the Raiders, contributing multiple assists and a key 3-pointer at 1:15 that pushed their lead to 20-14. Despite Hannah Smith's efforts for the Eagles, including a 3-pointer that narrowed the gap to 19-20, the Raiders closed the quarter with a 25-21 advantage, aided by Akaysa Duitscher's 3-pointer in the final minute.

In the second quarter, the Raiders outscored the Eagles 23-15 to extend their lead. Molly Schany played a pivotal role for the Raiders, contributing multiple layups and securing defensive rebounds, including a layup at 2:11 that helped extend their lead to 12 points, their largest of the quarter. The Eagles' Stanley made a notable effort by scoring two 3-pointers, keeping the team competitive. Despite the Eagles' efforts, the Raiders maintained control, with Lexie Van Kekerix and Wobig each adding points from the free-throw line to secure the quarter's advantage.

In the third quarter, the Raiders outscored the Eagles 19-12, extending their lead to 19 points at one point, with the largest lead occurring at the 1:19 mark. The Raiders' Van Kekerix contributed two free throws early in the quarter, and Schany added a layup to maintain momentum. The Eagles' Madilyn Melton was active at the free-throw line, converting four consecutive attempts to keep them within striking distance. Anderson of the Raiders made a jumper in the paint, followed by Duitscher's 3-pointer, which helped them maintain a comfortable lead.

In the fourth quarter, the Raiders expanded their lead with efficient shooting, going 8-for-10 from the field, including a 3-pointer by Jenna Kluxdal at 4:32. The home team also capitalized on their opportunities in the paint, contributing to their 20 points in the quarter. The Eagles struggled with their shooting, making only 3 of 16 field goals, although Melton managed a 3-pointer at 7:23. The Raiders maintained a strong defensive presence, highlighted by a block from Kluxdal, and ended the quarter with a 27-point lead at one point, securing an 87-60 victory.
