Tough Second Half Holds Back Northwestern

Orange City, Iowa - Northwestern College fell to Hastings 69-60 in a conference matchup at the Bultman Center on Thursday.

In the first quarter, the Broncos jumped out to an early lead, with McKenna Yates scoring a 3-pointer to start the game at 9:00. The Broncos extended their lead to 7-0 by 7:00, thanks to a layup by Mariyah Avila. The Red Raiders' Lexie Van Kekerix responded with a layup at 6:00, marking their first points. The Raiders managed to close the gap slightly, with Hali Anderson and Madison Naig contributing layups, bringing the score to 11-10 in favor of the Broncos. However, Rachel Goodon added a layup for Hastings, ending the quarter with a 13-10 lead.

In the second quarter, Northwestern outscored the Broncos 24-14, showing strong offensive play. Early in the quarter, Avila made a 3-pointer at 8:29, helping the Broncos to briefly take a five-point lead, their largest of the quarter. The Raiders responded with a series of successful plays, including a layup by Ashtyn Wobig and a jumper by Anderson, which eventually put them ahead. Anderson capped the Raiders' run with a 3-pointer at 1:37, creating a seven-point lead, the largest for the Raiders in the quarter. Both teams exchanged turnovers and missed opportunities in the final minutes, but the Raiders maintained their lead through effective scoring and defensive rebounds.

In the third quarter, the Broncos turned the game around with a strong offensive performance, outscoring the Raiders 25-13. The Raiders initially extended their lead to 11 points at 9:07 with Molly Schany scoring two consecutive layups assisted by Anderson. However, the Broncos responded with a 7-0 run led by Avila, narrowing the gap to a single point at 3:53. The Broncos continued their momentum, with Alyssa Baker scoring crucial points including a pair of free throws at 1:17, ultimately helping the Broncos gain a lead they maintained until the end of the quarter.

In the fourth quarter, the Broncos started strong with a 9-point lead at the 00:22 mark, but the Raiders fought back with Kylie Foss making significant contributions, including a layup and two free throws to narrow the gap. The Broncos maintained their edge with scoring from Yates and Rachel Goodon, increasing their lead to 57-54. Despite Van Kekerix's 3-pointer bringing the Raiders within one point at 61-60, the Broncos pulled away again with a series of free throws and layups, finishing the quarter with a 17-13 advantage. The game ended with the Broncos securing a 69-60 victory over the Raiders.

Molly Schany's 12 points got her to over 2,000 points in her career.
