Raiders Dominate Opening Game in Florida

Ave Maria, Fla. - Northwestern secured a 78-50 victory over Ave Maria on Wednesday at the Tom Golisano Field House.

In the first quarter, the Red Raiders took an early lead against the Gyrenes with Lexie Van Kekerix scoring a jumper to tie the game 2-2 after Ave's Lavariah Armstead opened with a layup. The Raiders capitalized on the Gyrenes' turnovers, with Hali Anderson contributing significantly by assisting on multiple plays, including a 3-pointer by Allison Piercy at 6:52 to give the Raiders a 9-6 lead. The visitors extended their lead with a 14-0 run, capped by Akaysa Duitscher's 3-pointer at 2:14, making it 20-6. Ave struggled to keep up, with Colleen Shanahan scoring a layup at 1:08 before Maren Nerem added two free throws to close the quarter with the Raiders leading 22-12.

In the second quarter, Northwestern outscored Ave Maria 19-12. The quarter began with Anderson of the Raiders converting a layup at the 9:30 mark, extending their lead. Molly Schany was crucial for the Red Raiders, scoring an and one layup to stretch the lead further. Ave's Emily Rapacz sank a 3-pointer at 3:15 to cut the deficit, but the Raiders' defensive pressure, highlighted by Van Kekerix's steal and layup, maintained their momentum. Anderson sealed the quarter with a 3-pointer assisted by Madison Naig, bringing the Raiders to a 17-point lead at the end of the quarter.

The third quarter began with the Red Raiders' Piercy scoring a 3-pointer assisted by Anderson, extending their lead. The Gyrenes' Mary Smith committed two quick fouls early on, while Ashtyn Wobig of the Raiders missed two consecutive free throws. The Raiders maintained control with Van Kekerix and Schany contributing to the scoreboard, while Ave struggled with shooting, missing several baskets and free throws. Despite some late scoring by Ave, including a fast-break layup by Casey Humphrey, the Red Raiders held a steady lead and outscored Ave 18-15 in the quarter, finishing with a 59-39 advantage.

In the fourth quarter, the Raiders maintained control with a strong start, highlighted by Schany's layup at 9:40, extending their lead to 61-42. Ave's Ella Thompson responded with a 3-pointer, but the Raiders quickly regained momentum with consistent scoring, including Anderson's successful free throws at 7:20. The Red Raiders capitalized on turnovers, with Piercy making a key steal and subsequent jumper at 5:00, further solidifying their lead. Despite several attempts by the Gyrenes, the Raiders' defense remained effective, resulting in an 11-point quarter score for the home team compared to Northwestern's 19, culminating in a final score of 78-50 in favor of the Red Raiders.
