Van Kekerix Game Winning Three Boosts Raiders to Victory

Sioux City, Iowa - Northwestern College defeated Morningside College 69-67 on Wednesday at RVSC-Allee Gym.

During the first quarter, the Mustangs took an early lead with Lily Vollertsen scoring a layup in the paint, initiating a series of successful plays that put them ahead 8-2. The Raiders' Lexie Van Kekerix responded with two free throws, but the Mustangs continued to extend their lead, reaching a quarter-high nine-point advantage at 5:08. The Red Raiders then began to close the gap, largely due to Molly Schany's efforts, who scored multiple layups and free throws. By the quarter's end, the Raiders had narrowed the deficit to three points, trailing 19-16.

In the second quarter, the Mustangs extended their lead to 10 points by 3:59, thanks in part to a scoring run that included a 3-pointer by Alexis Spier. The Raiders committed several turnovers early in the quarter, with Van Kekerix and Hali Anderson both giving up possession, while the Mustangs capitalized on their defensive efforts. Van Kekerix managed to score a fast-break layup, reducing the Mustangs' lead briefly, but the Raiders struggled with shooting efficiency, missing key free throws and baskets. The Mustangs maintained control through the quarter, with Spier contributing significantly to their scoring, including successful free throws and a layup, helping them secure a 15-10 advantage in the quarter.

In the third quarter, the Mustangs extended their lead significantly, outscoring the Raiders 21-14. At 10:00, Ella Wragge of the Mustangs started the quarter with a successful layup, assisted by Vollertsen, setting the tone for the home team. Anderson of the Raiders made a notable impact with a layup at 9:23 following her own steal, but the Mustangs responded with consistent scoring from Vollertsen, who contributed several points in the paint. As the quarter progressed, the Mustangs capitalized on the Raiders' turnovers, with Clancy Brown and Chaise Pfanstiel each adding points to maintain the home team's momentum, resulting in a 15-point lead at 3:45.

In the fourth quarter, the Red Raiders outscored the Mustangs 29-12, overcoming a 15-point deficit early in the quarter. Hali Anderson contributed significantly, registering a key steal and providing crucial free throws to narrow the gap. Van Kekerix was instrumental in the comeback where she scored 11 of her 20 points on 5-5 shooting. After multiple hustle plays down the stretch the Raiders had an opportunity to win the game down 67-66 with 25 seconds left. After a missed layup by Northwestern, a diving Akaysa Duitscher and Van Kekerix save possession for the Raiders. Anderson then found Van Kekerix for an open three from the right wing to give the Raiders a 69-67 lead.  Despite the Mustangs' early advantage, the Raiders' defensive pressure and efficient offense in the fourth boosted them to a comeback victory.
