Strong Defense Guides the Raiders to Victory

Orange City, Iowa- Northwestern defeated Doane 71-65 on Saturday at the Bultman Center.

The first quarter of the game between Northwestern and Doane saw several momentum shifts, beginning with Northwestern's Hali Anderson scoring a layup at 9:13, giving her team a slight edge. The Red Raiders extended their lead to 7-2 with a fast-break layup by Lexie Van Kekerix at 7:15. The Tigers responded with a 3-pointer from Maddie Portwine at 6:59, narrowing the gap to 7-5. The quarter continued with back-and-forth scoring, ending with the Raiders leading 18-16, as Akaysa Duitscher's 3-pointer at 1:02 played a key role in maintaining their advantage. Both teams committed five turnovers, but the Red Raiders' defensive rebounds helped them secure a two-point lead by the end of the quarter.

In the second quarter, the Raiders extended their lead with a consistent offensive effort. Allison Piercy opened the scoring with a 3-pointer at 9:12, setting the tone for the Raiders' offensive momentum. Duitscher and Molly Schany contributed significantly, with Duitscher hitting a 3-pointer and Schany adding multiple key baskets. The Raiders' defense also played a crucial role, highlighted by three blocks and several defensive rebounds, helping them maintain a lead that reached 10 points at 5:35. Despite the Tigers' attempts to close the gap, Northwestern held onto their advantage, leading 36-28 by the end of the first half.

The Raiders outscored the Tigers 16-13 in the third quarter, maintaining a lead throughout. Ashtyn Wobig had a strong quarter for the Raiders, contributing with multiple successful buckets, including a layup at the 5:30 mark that extended the team's lead. The Tigers struggled with turnovers, committing five in the quarter, which the Raiders capitalized on to build a 14-point lead with 4:21 remaining. Despite Doane's efforts to close the gap, including a jumper by Megan Chambers, the Raiders' consistent scoring allowed them to retain control.

In the fourth quarter, the Tigers initiated a comeback attempt, starting with Macy Holtz's fast-break layup at 9:42. Megan Chambers contributed significantly to the Tigers' scoring with several free throws and a late layup, totaling 10 points in the quarter. The Raiders maintained their lead throughout, with key free throws from Maren Nerem and a critical 3-pointer by Madison Naig, extending their advantage.
